— Clive

Clive (Japanese: クレーベ Clerbe) is a playable character in Fire Emblem Gaiden and its remake, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia. He is the former leader of the Deliverance, a resistance force against the Rigelian invasion and Desaix's coup d'etat of Zofia, and the elder brother of fellow knight Clair. When Alm came in Mycen's stead to join the liberation, Clive ceded leadership of the army to Alm's command instead.

Fire Emblem Gaiden

Role

When Alm and his group arrived at the resistance's headquarters within a shrine, Clive requested that Alm take over as its leader and joined his group, fighting in the remainder of the war with Rigel.

Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

Role

Clive reprises his role in Gaiden's remake, where he plays a much more significant role in guiding Alm. He's very invested in Alm's growth as new leader of the Deliverance, and assists him in his decisions. He is looked up to and respected by knights and commoners alike.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Clive is the first Cavalier obtained in Alm's route, unless one of the villagers was made into one. Clive's joining level will be on par with the rest of the army, and so will his base stats. He joins at level 6, making him only one level away from his first promotion into a Paladin. His high mobility is a great asset on the battlefield, especially since most units are stuck to a Movement range of 4 or 5. His resistance is very poor, though this is not a big issue due to Alm's route not having many magic users. He's the best wielder of the Ridersbane for Act 3 and at least the first half of Act 4, due to Clair and Mathilda not being durable enough, the villager cavaliers need far more training to promote into paladin than him while not outperforming him, and the Knights will have worse movement and speed. Clive won't be able to double the act 3 cavaliers at base, so he will need an early promotion into paladin for +1 speed and a point from the speed shrine to be able to effectively one round the enemy cavaliers with a forged Ridersbane. The Ridersbane is a very important weapon, and as he is the best wielder of it Clive will be invaluable for any map with mounted units.

During Act 4, Clive faces strict competition from Zeke and Mathilda. Zeke's stats are generally as good or better than Clive's, notably requiring 1 less speed shrine than Clive, and a trained Mathilda will have significantly more speed at the cost of needing more investment. However Clive can still be a decent unit in Act 4 if he's promoted to a Gold Knight, as Gold Knight bases are very high, and his stats aren't far enough from the competition to invalidate him.

Personality

Clive believed that Mycen would be the ideal leader and future king of Zofia and wished to cede control of the liberation to him, but when Mycen declined to fight, Clive instead entrusted leadership to Alm, believing that having Alm in the command role would allow himself and the other freedom fighters to have an easier time fighting in the war.[1] Despite this, in Gaiden, he had minimal characterization, owing to having minimal dialogue.

Echoes: Shadows of Valentia expands on Clive's personality. He is shown as a very mellow, kind, and calm individual who will not hesitate to be serious and imposing when he has to be. His humility defined him as a leader, as understanding the big picture, recognizing his own weaknesses, and appreciating the potential of the common people allowed him to step down as leader of the Deliverance and cede that position to Alm.[2]

Ending

Gaiden

If Mathilda survived
He was entrusted with the command of the newly formed knights' order of Valentia.
Recently, it's been heard that he accepted a beautiful wife.

If Mathilda died
He was entrusted with the command of the newly formed knights' order of Valentia.
However, afterwards, he lost his life in a battle against pirates.

Echoes: Shadows of Valentia

If Mathilda survived
Clive was appointed the first captain of the One Kingdom's Brotherhood of Knights. His talent and honesty made him popular with commoners and nobles alike, and under his leadership, the knights flourished. He and his lovely wife were objects of the people's envy.

If Mathilda died
His heart still heavy from the loss of Mathilda, Clive was appointed captain of the One Kingdom's Brotherhood of Knights. A few short years later, he was killed in a skirmish with pirates. The people grieved deeply over the young loss of so fine a knight.

  1. "Ah, so you're Alm? Thanks for taking care of my little sister. As expected of General Mycen's grandson, you're a brave one. Well, Alm. I've got a favor to ask of you. From today on, won't you act as our leader? There's no one we can depend on now that the royal family of Zofia's been destroyed. That's why we went before Sir Mycen, the great hero of Zofia, to tell him of our desires and beseech him to become our king. But for some reason, the general refuses to step up. Therefore, I would like you to command the liberation forces in his stead. That will enable the rest of us to fight to our heart's content. So, Alm. I'm counting on you. Please save Zofia." — Clive, Fire Emblem Gaiden
  2. "This needs to happen, Fernand. You know it as well as I. It's true the Deliverance began as a group of like-minded Zofian knights, but it's grown into an army where most of our volunteers are of common birth. We share a cause, but little else. I know not how to speak to their hearts. Sir Mycen began as a common soldier before rising to a knight and a count. His story resonates with these people. Do you not agree that his grandson is just the banner they would rally to?" — Clive, Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia
