Lon'qu (Japanese: ロンクー Ronkuu) is a mercenary of Chon'sin heritage residing in Ferox, formerly employed by its West-Khan Basilio.

Role

Lon'qu previously served as Basilio's champion in Ferox's inter-khan tournament, but was defeated and replaced by Marth. Following Chrom's victory in the tournament as Flavia's champion, Basilio assigned Lon'qu to serve with Chrom, as "West Ferox's contribution" to Ylisse's defense.

Lon'qu automatically joins as a level 4 Myrmidon at the end of Chapter 4. He makes a very strong first impression; his 13 base Speed is sufficient to double enemy Barbarians and Wyvern Riders right out of the gate on Hard, and even on Lunatic and Lunatic+ he can hold his own as long as bulk is outsourced to the right pair-up partner. His platonic support with Vaike is particularly mutually beneficial, as Lon'qu shores up Vaike's tetchy Speed and Vaike provides Lon'qu brute Strength in return. Additionally, Lon'qu benefits from the enemy lineup being dominated by axes and swords up until Chapter 11, meaning he will rarely face weapon triangle disadvantage. He also starts with the first Killing Edge and the weapon level and Skill to put it to use, giving him a way to burst down high-priority targets such as bosses. Once the story shifts to the Valm arc, Lon'qu will only have to face one chapter dominated by lances before Master Seals become freely buyable and he can promote.

Lon'qu's class sets are the Myrmidon, Thief, and Wyvern Rider lines, allowing him to choose between Swordmaster, Assassin, Trickster, Wyvern Lord, and Griffon Rider as his final class. Swordmaster provides Lon'qu with strong skills in Astra, giving him high but unreliable burst damage, and Swordfaire, which gives him a flat damage boost to his primary weapon type. Assassin is a direct upgrade to Swordmaster with slightly better maximum Strength and Skill and the ability to use bows, patching up Lon'qu's inability to fight at range; it is his best option for remaining in his role as a glass cannon swordsman. Trickster isn't really worth it on Lon'qu, as he lacks the raw Magic to abuse staves and the player will have access to an abundance of better options such as Maribelle, Anna, and a promoted Sage or Falcon Knight. Wyvern Lord gives Lon'qu the power of flight and 1-2 range and helps shore up his Strength and Defense, but he will have to build up his weapon level from scratch. Griffon Rider is much the same, except being slightly faster and more fragile and being unable to use lances.

As a father, Lon'qu provides raw Speed, but little in the way of strong skills. His Swordfaire looks nice on paper, but every potential daughter either has or wants Pegasus Knight access to get Galeforce, and will pick up the superior Lancefaire as part of the package. Meanwhile, his potential sons all either have or want Axefaire or Tomefaire. All three of these weapon specialties confer 1-2 range, something swords lack outside of the rare Levin Sword and the unique Amatsu. He is best used to father children who have strong class sets at base and only need stats, such as Severa and Inigo (both of whom also get Wyvern Rider from him as a potential finishing class). Notably, he leaves his children's Magic cap untouched, meaning he can also father magical children such as Laurent and Brady without significantly harming their damage output long term.

There are two different variations of Lon'qu available in Heroes.

Personality

Lon'qu is typically silent and unsociable, speaking only when necessary, but he has no idea how to interact with women; he gets flustered in their presence and tries to make a red-faced getaway as soon as they get near. His gynophobia is caused by a traumatic childhood incident in which his childhood friend Ke'ri was killed by bandits despite his best efforts to protect her. As a result, he vowed to never let anyone get close enough to him to be hurt by him in such a way; while he tries to avoid people of both genders, he has a far stronger adverse reaction to women. If Lon'qu is forced to interact with a woman, he will instruct her to keep her distance from him. For some reason, the only woman who does not trigger Lon'qu's gynophobia at first sight is Nowi, likely due to her resembling a young girl even though she is significantly older than most of the women in Awakening.

Despite his difficulty with interacting with women, Lon'qu practices to try to get better at talking to them. In battle, Lon'qu is able to suppress his gynophobia in the face of danger, whenever he fights alongside or against women. Once Lon'qu spends enough time with a woman and potentially marries her, his gynophobia is suppressed in her presence. Should Lon'qu have a daughter, his gynophobia will not trigger.

Aside from his gynophobia, Lon'qu is stoic and takes his swordsmanship very seriously, up to the point that he gets irritated when his technique is under question. He also admires Basilio's strength and strives to become as good a warrior as he is. Basilio, in turn, holds Lon'qu's skills in high regard.

Lon'qu returned to Regna Ferox and served as Basilio's right-hand man. Later, he apparently challenged the West-Khan to a duel, though no record remains of why it was fought or who emerged the victor.
