Ylisse (pronounced /⁠ɪˈlis⁠/^[key]; Japanese: イーリス Iris) is a kingdom located in the south-east of the continent of the same name. It borders the Theocracy of Plegia to the west, and Regna Ferox to the north. In the distant past, the territory now comprising Ylisse was part of the Holy Kingdom of Archanea, and the island kingdom of Talys. Ylisse is ruled by a monarch, known as the Exalt; at the beginning of the events of Fire Emblem Awakening, Emmeryn is the Exalt.

Prior to the events of Awakening, the previous Exalt, Chrom's father, waged a terrible war on Plegia, with the intent of wiping out the Grimleal, a cult seeking to resurrect the Fell Dragon Grima. The war ended with his death, and ever since then, his daughter Emmeryn had sought to repair relations between her nation and Plegia. Unfortunately, Gangrel, the king of Plegia, sought only to conquer Ylisse, a desire that led both him and Emmeryn to their downfalls.

Trivia

• Nino's mother shares her name with the Japanese name of Ylisse, Iris.
• The term "Halidom" is a reference to Archanea, though this was muddled in the localization. The Japanese term for "Halidom" is "Holy Kingdom" (聖王国), the same as the Holy Kingdom of Archanea, the nation Ylisse is a successor to.
  • Similarly, Exalt is "Holy King" (聖王) in Japanese, and is not related at all to Exalted Falchion, which is "divine sword Falchion" (神剣ファルシオン) in Japanese, a term used in dialogue of the Archanea games that was translated as "the divine blade Falchion" in Shadow Dragon.
    • Holy King also referred to Seliph at the end of Genealogy of the Holy War, and Alm at the end of Gaiden and its remake (translated as "Exalted King" for Alm's DLC Einherjar card in Awakening, and "Saint-King" in Shadows of Valentia).
