Karla (Japanese: カアラ Karla) is a playable Swordmaster in Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade. She is the sister of Karel, wife of Bartre, and mother of Fir.

Biography

Karla was born in an isolated region of Sacae that is unintegrated with any Sacaean tribes. Despite it being her birthplace, her connection to being "Sacaean" seems to be tenuous at best; when asked about her heritage, she instead talks about her ancestors who traveled from across the sea long ago.

In her youth, Karla lived in a family unit of at least six members, though their specific identities aside from herself, Karel, and their two parents remain unelaborated. Her home culture was one where women were subservient and disallowed to wield a blade, though there is little concrete information on other aspects of her home life. According to Karel, their clan was especially centered around a particular sword technique.

According to Karla, she and Karel were close in their youth, though when Karla shares a specific memory, Karel says he does not remember it. Despite loathing the sword, and presumably being forbidden from doing so, Karla learned the art of the blade as a way to get closer to her brother.

Eventually Karel's skill with the sword became so great that he compelled himself to murder the rest of his clan as a test of strength, the supposed destiny of their bloodline. Karla was only spared by her own lack of skill. The sequence of events of this event and how it correlates with Karla leaving home is somewhat unclear; Karla expresses shock when she learns that Karel has killed their parents, which seems to imply she was absent for the event.

Regardless, Karla seeks out her brother by traveling the continent and participating in blood sports such as arenas. While Karla paid almost no attention to her opponents or anyone else she met, her reputation as "untouchable" eventually gained her the moniker "Sword Princess". At some point when she was in the Western Isles, she bested Bartre in a duel.

Eventually, by happenstance, Karla is in Ostia as Eliwood and Hector are preparing for their final confrontation with Nergal. If Bartre elects to enter the local arena, she will be his opponent, marking the two's second duel. Should the battle end in a draw, she concludes that the lordlings' party will eventually attract Karel's attention with their strength, and elects to join.

After Nergal's defeat, she marries Bartre and has a daughter, Fir, who inherits her sword skills. Karla eventually dies of an illness some time before the Disturbance of Bern.

Karla appears in Chapter 31x of Hector Mode as a playable character, one of two exclusive to Hector Mode (the other being Farina).

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Karla is arguably the worst unit in The Blazing Blade, for several different reasons.

• Firstly, she provides nothing new: by this point, there are several sword fighting units who can do everything she can do just as competently. Lyn, Marcus, Jaffar, Harken, and Isadora are but a few examples of this, and a good few of them bring more to the table than just killing things. Her stats are not terrible, but her physical durability is very poor and her strength is surprisingly low at this point in the game, and both her brother Karel and a trained Guy generally outclass her.
• Second, her movement is average, and the upcoming chapters are very large and require lots of movement. Victory or Death, the chapter after she joins, is extremely big in particular, but there are a lot of dangerous areas in Light and mobility to rush in or out is vital to success.
• Third, because she uses swords, her options for 1–2 range (which is necessary for good enemy phase combat) are extremely limited, and the only 2 range attacks she can do are the magic swords Runesword, Light Brand, and Wind Sword (which requires the Mario Kart: Double Dash!! bonus disc), which negate the Swordmasters' critical bonus when attacking at range (or for the Runesword, at all).
• Fourth, her recruitment is extremely late into the game, and has several failure conditions, including if Bartre is killed, not trained, or not deployed. There is a lot of effort needed to get Bartre at an appropriate level throughout the game due to his terrible speed and overall shaky start, which only gets worse in Hector Hard Mode.
• Lastly, due to her late recruitment, she can only contribute for a few chapters before Athos and even Renault show her up in combat. Both of them hit resistance, which most enemies have less of than defense, and provide staff utility, which Karla cannot replicate.

Nevertheless, if you absolutely dedicate yourself to using her, she will still not do much other units cannot accomplish. Besides her supports, she has nothing of value that cannot be replicated, unless your army is in dire need of her services for some reason (such as a massacre of your units).

As a positive point towards Karla, she joins with another Wo Dao, which can be useful for one aiming towards the Funds ranking.

Overall, Karla serves as an easter egg character at best, and a horrible unit at worst.

Karla has been rendered by her single-minded drive to locate Karel into a blunt and somewhat naïve person. Towards her goal, she travels across Elibe and participates in numerous arena duels. Despite being well traveled, she does not bother to retain much information about the people she has met or their traditions. This is accented by the isolation of her home clan's lifestyle, leading to her having a keen disinterest of the outside world.

Karla's skill has garnered her rivals in both Bartre and Vaida, though these rivalries, particularly Vaida's, are one-sided.

While Karla readily accepts duels, she has no emotional attachment to the practice. When Vaida challenges her to a duel to see who is stronger, Karla readily declares herself the weaker to avoid the hassle. Her rivalry with Bartre is somewhat more involved, seeming to at least find something in his persistence.

Endings

Karla, Sword Vassal
After the conflict, Karla became involved with a warrior she met. She died of an illness several years later.

Karla and Bartre
Karla and Bartre were reunited in Ostia. During the battle, they became friends. That friendship deepened into love, and they were wed. Later, Karla died of illness. Bartre took their daughter to her uncle and joined Karla.

While searching for her brother's whereabouts, she would drop by various arenas, winning in succession until she came to be feared as the Sword Princess. In the arena, she was challenged by Bartre, who she took an interest in, and they eventually grew to be acquaintances. Though born in Sacae, she was not really influenced by the various other tribes, leading to an ignorant outlook of the world. The law of inheritance meant only one would learn the secret ways of the family—and so she lost everyone in her family except Karel, who then severed his ties to the world. She continues to search for him. When she finally reunites with Karel, he tells her to draw her blade. Karla says if he wants to kill her, then he should do so—and starts reminiscing on old memories. After this, the siblings finally came to an understanding.

Trivia

• Karla's paired ending with Bartre can be read to imply that Bartre committed suicide after Karla's death; however, Bartre appears alive in Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade after her death. Bartre "joining" Karla is not said or implied in the Japanese version and is a translation error.
