| “ | I'm glad you're OK, Corrin. You must have the devil's own luck! | ” | — Leo |
|---|
Leo (Japanese: レオン Leon) is a character in Fire Emblem Fates. He is a younger prince of Nohr and the son of Garon. He is one of Corrin's adoptive siblings. He is very intelligent and does not like making mistakes. He favors using magic over fighting with a sword. Like all other Nohrian and Hoshidan royalty, he possesses the power of Dragon Vein, being able to alter the terrain around oneself.
Biography
Leo is Corrin's younger adoptive brother. After a sparring match between Corrin and Xander, he accompanies Corrin to the capital of Nohr. There, Corrin is ordered to execute several helpless Hoshidan prisoners, including Rinkah and Kaze. When Corrin refuses to do so, Leo pretends to execute them so Xander can sneak them out. During the Hoshidan attack at the expedition to the Bottomless Canyon, Leo and the other siblings rescue Corrin from Hoshidan reinforcements.
Birthright
If Corrin sides with Hoshido, Leo feels angry and betrayed. When Corrin's party is tricked and attacked by the Nohrian dark mage Zola, Leo arrives at the end of the battle intending to execute Zola for his dishonesty and cowardice. Corrin convinces him to spare Zola, but Leo ignores this and denounces Corrin as a traitor. He next encounters them in Cheve, where Corrin is attempting to convince Camilla that Garon must be stopped. Leo interrupts them, again denounces them and preventing them from convincing Camilla to join them. He attempts to kill Corrin, but is forced to retreat when Scarlet's resistance army arrives. He warns Corrin he is not through with them and leaves with Camilla.
Later, he ambushes the group in the Woods of the Forlorn and attempts to convince himself that he always hated Corrin. He also expresses jealousy towards Xander and Camilla's favoritism, but he is unable steel his resolve for his battle against Corrin and is defeated. Corrin refuses to kill him, and asks for his help to stop Garon, but he refuses to fight against his own family. Azura gives Leo a mysterious crystal. Leo provides Corrin's the group with a warp book that can transport them to and from Notre Sagesse so they can meet the Rainbow Sage and receive his power. Leo leaves to examine Azura's crystal, which shows him Garon's true form. Realizing Corrin is correct, he appears again later to execute Iago and to allow Corrin and Elise to pass through without interference. Leo does not join Corrin's forces, finding himself unable to raise his tome against his father, but knows now that he must be stopped.
After ending the war with Garon's defeat and the death of Xander, Camilla abdicates the throne, and Leo becomes the next king of Nohr.
Conquest
If Corrin sides with Nohr, Leo helps fight the Hoshidans. When Garon sends them to suppress the Ice Tribe rebellion, Leo goes behind Garon's back and sends his retainers Odin and Niles to aid Corrin.
Leo fully joins Corrin's group during a Hoshidan assassination attempt against Garon. After the battle ends, his Brynhildr resonates with Corrin's Yato and transforms it into the Grim Yato. Leo serves alongside Corrin for the rest of the campaign against Hoshido; he is occasionally responsible for personally executing some of Corrin's more devious foes, such as Zola and Iago.
Revelation
If Corrin refuses to take a side, Leo denounces them as a traitor along with the other Nohrians. He next encounters them in Izumo, where he executes the Nohrian dark mage Zola for his dishonorable tactics in battle. Corrin attempts to explain to him what is happening, but Leo dismisses their story as the work of an overactive imagination. Later, however, he and Xander overhear Garon plotting to destroy both Hoshido and Nohr, making them wonder if Corrin was telling the truth. Ultimately, the two brothers decide to place their faith in Corrin and join them at the Bottomless Canyon alongside their retainers, where they help defeat Iago. Leo fights alongside Corrin for the rest of the campaign against Valla, and eventually lends them the power of Brynhildr to transform the Alpha Yato into the Omega Yato and destroy Anankos.

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Leo is a prepromoted Dark Knight that joins in chapter 14 of Conquest and chapter 17 of Revelation. In Conquest his bases are good enough to deal with most of the enemies on the map, though he will usually not double or get doubled by most enemies and will be a great counter to the bow and magic users of that chapter. In Revelation, while his bases aren't as good due to him joining later, he can still contribute well and can serve as a good magic pair up bot.
Leo joins with solid all-around bases and growths as well as decent weapon levels, and though the fact that Leo does not excel in any particular area can be an issue, they are still good enough to have him contribute and grant him flexibility in a wide range of classes. Leo also comes with his personal tome Brynhildr, whose high might and 1-2 range; unlike most tomes or 1-2 range options in Fates, the Brynhildr does not carry any penalties, but instead gives Leo an additional +10 Dodge and has an Aegis-like effect against units attacking him with magic. He comes with the skills Pragmatic, Heartseeker and Malefic Aura. Pragmatic is his personal skill which allows him to deal more damage to, as well as receive less damage from previously injured foes. This skill is good in combination with skills such as Savage Blow as it often gives Leo the extra damage needed to kill an enemy or deal high damage to them. Heartseeker lowers the avoid of enemies by 20 which is very useful for capturing certain bosses, though Leo may need to endure a counterattack as he must be adjacent to an enemy unit for it to activate. Malefic Aura is a great skill for additional magic damage. Leo can use both tomes and swords but he will mostly be using the Brynhildr, and he will only be using sword against enemies with low defense but high resistance such as enemy healers.
In his Dark Knight class he learns the skills Seal Magic and Lifetaker. Since Leo almost never struggles against magic enemies Seal Magic can be useful as it cripples enemy magic users allowing units with lower resistance to finish them off; unfortunately, due to most magic using enemies having low defense anyway, meaning they usually will not survive a combination of said unit's and Leo's attack magic, Seal Magic is situational outside of dealing with some bosses that use magic. Lifetaker allows Leo to regain HP if he defeats a foe; this combined with Leo's decent HP, resistance, and defense allows Leo to develop a somewhat reliable enemy phase as well as avoid needing to use a Heal staff on him when injured.
On the subject of reclassing Leo has three options: Sorcerer, Strategist and Butler. Both Butler and Strategist give him the skills Resistance +2 and Gentilhomme. Resistance +2 is mostly useless on Leo because of his high natural resistance and the effects of Brynhildr. Gentilhomme can be a bit tricky to setup, but can prove useful for helping strong female units like Camilla. Strategist causes Leo to loses his ability to tank physical attacks somewhat well, but instead makes him more into a strong magical attacker and support unit. Rally Resistance and Inspiration are both useful supportive skills granting nearby allies boosts, along with getting access to staves make Leo into a strong support unit, and it lets him continue to use Brynhildr in combat. Butler is a sub-optimal class since Leo is not proficient in daggers and will need two Arms Scrolls in order to use the magic-based Flame Shuriken, along with the fact that Leo cannot use Brynhildr in this class. This class gives him the skills Live to Serve and Tomebreaker. Live to Serve is only useful for Leo if he stays in a class that can use use staves, while Tomebreaker is largely unnecessary on Leo thanks to his high resistance and his personal tome's effects. Sorcerer also makes Leo more magically proficient, but unlike Strategist, it gives him additional crit. Sorcerer can greatly enhance his combat by allowing him to ORKO more enemies, but it sacrifices Dark Knight's other utilities, mainly its high movement and superior bulk. As a Sorcerer, Leo learns Vengeance and Bowbreaker. Vengeance raises the user's damage base on how much damage he has taken, along with the damage he would deal normally. While Vengeance is a bit unreliable and risky to use, it can be a decent skill to keep on Leo for powerful combinations with Lifetaker. Bowbreaker is not particularly helpful on Leo as he already has weapon triangle advantage over bow users to begin with, although it can serve as a situational check against Takumi on the Conquest route.
Leo can also perform very well as a DLC exclusive Dark Falcon. While he does lose quite a bit of bulk reclassing, he gains an extra point of magic and, more importantly, gains +4 speed directly, and the Speed +2 skill after only one level, allowing him to double more enemies without a need for speed pair ups. He also gains the broken skills of Rally Movement and Galeforce, though they will take some heavy grinding and/or favoritism to actually obtain.
Between his own statline and his son Forrest, Leo heavily desires support partners that can give him magic, speed, or even both. For Friendship Seal partners, Niles gives +5 speed as an Adventurer at C support, and +6 at B and A. Leo will receive the Outlaw class tree if this A+ support is chosen. Both promoted classes won't be good as final classes due to Leo being unable to use Brynhildr, but they can be used temporarily if one chooses for useful utility skills like Locktouch and Movement +1 from either class, and Lucky 7 and Pass from Adventurer. From Bow Knight, the main skill he would want is Shurikenbreaker to have a greater shot at avoiding pesky shuriken attacks, especially from the Inevitable End Master Ninjas and Maids in the lategame of Conquest Lunatic. Odin can choose whether to give magic or speed for pair up bonuses depending on his class. He can either give +6 magic as a Sorcerer, or +5 speed as a Swordmaster. The Samurai class tree Leo receives gives several useful skills. Duelist's Blow gives extra avoid on player phase, Vantage allows the ability to strike first when at half or lower HP, Swordfaire gives extra damage with swords, which is extra useful if he remains as a Dark Knight, and Life and Death gives both units in combat extra damage, where Leo can avoid that extra damage by attacking at range with Brynhildr against most foes. Camilla doesn't give him much speed or magic, nor is able to give him a new class, but she'll be more useful being next to him to activate Rose's Thorns. In Revelation, Takumi gives +3 speed at C support, and +4 speed all other support levels, and gives him the Archer class tree, where skills like Skill +2, Certain Blow, and Air Superiority can help fix any accuracy issues he may have, and Quick Draw gives him some extra damage on player phase.
On the S support side, Felicia and Nyx both make excellent wives for him on the Conquest route owing to their good pair-up bonuses that synergize well with him and with Forrest; Nyx provides +8 Mag, +2 Spd, and +3 Res as a Sorcerer while Felicia provides +3 Mag, +5 Spd, +3 Lck, and +2 Res as a Maid and joins shortly after he does if Corrin is female. Beruka is another solid option, as the Malig Knight he obtains is a great class for Leo since he will be able to use Brynhildr, and the worse stats compared to Dark Knight are easily made up by gaining the ability to fly over terrain that would otherwise reduce his movement, and Savage Blow and Trample are worthy skills for any unit to use. She also grants Leo +3 Str, +2 Skl, +1 Lck, +5 Def, and +1 Mov as a Wyvern Lord, or +2 Mag, +2 Skl, +1 Lck, +4 Def, +2 Res, and +1 Mov in Malig Knight. While this pairing hinders Forrest's magic, Beruka can pass down Rally Defense, allowing Forrest to further fulfill a supportive role in tandem with his access to Gentilhomme, Rally Resistance, and Inspiration from his main classline. In Revelation, Sakura serves as an absolutely beautiful fit for Leo. She grants him +5 Mag, +6 Spd, +1 Lck, and +1 Res as an Onmyoji and gives him access to the Onmyoji class itself, which provides Tomefaire to boost the damage of his trademark Brynhildr.
Overall, Leo is a solid all-around unit that struggles on finding a particular area he is good in aside from countering enemy magic users. Because his bases and growths are not focused on one particular area he can be left behind by other units that are more potent in areas such as speed or magic. He also cannot reliably double without stat-boosting items or pair ups, and he can also be one-shot by units with effective weaponry such as the Kitsune. While this may lead to Leo seeming mediocre, he is not bad in any particular area either, giving him good utility and this gives him the role of patching up the weaknesses of certain teams. As such Leo is useful on most teams and can be seen as a "failsafe" in case other units are not up to snuff and will likely be one of the armies premiere magic users in both Conquest and Revelation.

Personality
Unlike Xander, Leo excels in magic and wields the sacred tome Brynhildr. He is exceptionally smart and can plan for any situation with ease. Instead of spending time outside, he sits inside to study. Like his siblings, he is bitter about the fact he was born to gain his mother favor in King Garon's eyes. His childhood as a pawn for his mother led to him growing a cold exterior, though he does occasionally openly express love for his siblings and retainers. According to Xander, Leo is exceptionally talented and could even easily surpass Xander himself with enough training, though Leo usually holds himself in low regard, possibly developing an inferiority complex because of his childhood.
Leo longs for attention from his older siblings, Camilla in particular. He believes that he is too capable, leading to others to dote on Corrin. Despite his jealousy of the attention Corrin receives, he does not resent Corrin for this.
Leo is quite ruthless towards those he hates. He executes Iago in Birthright and Conquest and kills Zola in Conquest and Revelation for their cowardly actions and attempting to beg for their lives. Corrin finds Leo's satisfaction at killing deeply disturbing, but Leo says he considers that some people deserve to die and that their actions led to that point. Leo often shows a calmness while killing.
Like Takumi, he feels inferior to his older brother. Xander's skill with the sword led to Leo choosing magic as his specialty, to distance himself from Xander's skills, though even so he still feels inferior to him.
In Revelation, Leo and Takumi initially get into disputes with each other due to their birthplaces. As the two continue to interact with each other, they realize they share quite a few hobbies and interests, and develop a friendship.
He likes tomatoes the most out of the army.

Trivia
- His Japanese name is very similar to Lyon's name in all languages.
- His English name is the Japanese name of Leon, and Leon's name is the Japanese name of Leo.
- Leo's eye color is inconsistent in official artwork for Fates. In his art on the box he has very light yellow or green eyes, in his other official art and portrait he has red eyes. He appears to be intended to have red eyes as that is the color he is consistently portrayed with in materials released after Fates, like Heroes and Warriors.
