The Black Hole (ブラックボール, Black Ball) is an item introduced in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It is based off a real-world black hole.

Overview[edit]

The Black Hole is an item that will set itself up in midair once thrown, creating a black hole. This then sucks in nearby items and projectiles, similarly to Gravitational Pull. Unlike Gravitational Pull, fighters are also pulled into the vortex. The user and projectiles owned by them are unaffected. Luma and Pikmin are not affected, except in the case of Pikmin becoming projectiles as part of Olimar's smash attacks and Pikmin Throw. Any kind of projectile or item Gravitational Pull cannot affect, as in projectiles that are not reflectable, projectiles that are attached to their user, or projectiles that do not have a graphical model, cannot be affected by Black Holes. While the hole itself deals no damage or knockback, fighters caught in the hole are continuously pulled into its center and forced into a tumble, leaving them extremely vulnerable to attacks from opponents and stage hazards. Projectiles drawn into a Black Hole have their ownership changed to the owner of the Black Hole, likely resulting in them damaging fighters caught in the vacuum. Projectiles that are caught in the center of a Black Hole for too long despawn earlier than they otherwise do.

Moves that allow the user to move in quick bursts, such as Teleport, Warp, and Quick Attack, can be used to escape the black hole before it disappears, and fast attacks can be used repeatedly to deter other opponents from attacking while a player is trapped. Creating projectiles while affected by a Black Hole is usually ineffective because the Black Hole redirects them back into the shooter.

Assist Trophies and projectiles they create are affected by Black Holes, unless the Assist Trophy is owned by the user of the Black Hole. Pokémon from Poké Balls and Master Balls are never affected by Black Holes, but their projectiles can be if they were summoned by opponents of the Black Hole's user. Pyukumuku, despite its item-like properties, is never affected by a Black Hole.

Some items become inert when entering a Black Hole, such as the Beetle, Soccer Ball, Beastball, Ore Club, Boomerang, POW Block, Freezie, Smoke Ball, Beehive, Gust Bellows, Poké Ball, Master Ball, and the Bob-omb. Grass is not affected by Black Holes. Bombers becomes inert upon entering a Black Hole but its explosion timer does not stop. Items that are thrown to set them up usually become inert when thrown into a Black Hole but ignore Black Holes once they are set. This includes Unira, Hothead, the Motion-Sensor Bomb, and other Black Holes. There are a number of exceptions to this. The Super Launch Star sets up even when thrown into a Black Hole. The Hocotate Bomb is affected post set up but moves fast enough to escape the vacuum. Killer Eye becomes inert if thrown into a Black Hole, but an active Killer Eye is drawn into a Black Hole without becoming inert. The Party Ball will set up upon hitting a surface or being attacked as normal even if it enters a Black Hole. The Cucco only activates after hitting an opponent if it lands on the ground afterward, so it cannot activate while suspended in the air by a Black Hole but will activate once the Black Hole subsides and the Cucco lands. The X Bomb sets up after colliding with a surface or opponent or if enough time has passed, and will activate if those conditions are met even while in a Black Hole. Once the X Bomb is active, it is not affected by a Black Hole. The Bombchu will explode against opponents even if thrown into a Black Hole. If a Gooey Bomb is thrown into a Black Hole, it will still attach to fighters and tick down toward its explosion. However, Gooey Bombs already attached to fighters or surfaces are not drawn into Black Holes. The Healing Sprout, in comparison, will not stick to fighters if thrown into a Black Hole. The Healing Field does not become inert, but it needs to collide with a surface to activate and is thus delayed by being caught within a Black Hole.

If a Final Smash is used, all Black Holes despawn. This is true of both unused Black Holes and active Black Holes. Black Holes cannot be spawned at all after a Smash Ball is spawned in Training mode. Once the Final Smash is used or the Smash Ball despawns, Black Holes are allowed to appear again.

Origin[edit]

While the black hole in Smash is original to the series, it is functionally similar to the real life Black hole. There are certain points in outer space with gravity so strong that nothing can escape from it. Not even light, the fastest known thing in the universe, can escape when caught in a black hole's pull.

Many video-games utilize black holes as environmental hazards or power-ups, including the Super Mario Galaxy games. Notably, the Smash Bros. rendition is similar in use to the Black Hole power in Kid Icarus: Uprising, which also serves as the basis for Palutena's Final Smash.
