— Lapis

Lapis (Japanese: ラピス Lapis) is a royal knight of Brodia and a retainer to Prince Alcryst, alongside Citrinne. Born to an impoverished family of yam farmers, she was appointed the role of royal retainer after winning a fighting tournament held by the royal family. Though she tries to hide her rural upbringing, it has taught her many skills which she employs to help her allies.

Lapis is a playable character in Fire Emblem Engage.

Biography

Main story

Lapis was born in a rural Brodian village of yam farmers, growing up in poverty due to the barren lands of the family farm.[1] Due to her family's lack of resources, she learned how to scavenge food and material from a young age,[5] as well as how to use these materials to craft all sorts of things.[6] With the scarcity of food available to them, she grew up with a variety of methods to efficiently use them, which she believed to be universally used methods of food preservation.[7] Her village was also frequently attacked by bears, which would trample their meager crops, causing her to learn methods to scare them off and eventually started hunting them for food, which made her become a very strong combatant.[1]

When the Brodian royal family held a fighting tournament to elect a royal retainer to Prince Alcryst,[a] Lapis entered in the hopes of becoming a royal soldier and earning a good salary to support her family.[9] Due to her experience fighting bears, she was strong enough to win the tournament and became a personal retainer to Alcryst,[1] sharing her position with Citrinne. Ashamed of her rural origin, she lied about her history and claimed to be of a well-off family, hiding her past as the daughter of yam farmers even from her closest allies.[10] Shortly after meeting Alcryst, he vowed to protect her instead, much to her dismay.[11]

After King Morion received word from Queen Ève that the Divine Dragon and their army were headed to Brodia, Lapis was ordered to meet them at the Firenese border alongside Alcryst and Citrinne. During their time standing guard, they encountered multiple bizarre creatures and bandits, causing them to assume that Alear and Prince Alfred were more of the same[12]—however, the misunderstanding was resolved soon after, and the Brodian trio accompanied them to the Grand Crossing before joining their army permanently.

During her time in the army, Lapis was responsible for crafting machinery for her allies, including the Muscle Maximizer Mark III to build muscle[13] and the Fogado Mark II to ward off bandits in Solm.[14] She also formed an alliance of protection with Alcryst, vowing to protect each other instead of both insisting they are less worthy of protection.[15] After the war, she traveled to war-torn towns and taught their inhabitants how to repair their homes and preserve resources in poverty, leaving them potatoes from her village as a gift. These potatoes ended up becoming popular, earning her village wealth and prosperity and causing her to be revered as "the Potato Goddess".[3]

Fell Xenologue

Like her main counterpart, the Lapis from another world served as Prince Alcryst's retainer and received a vow from him to protect her. She was killed prior to the events of the Fell Xenologue.[16]

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Joining at level 10 in Chapter 7, Lapis is able to promote instantly upon the chapter's end using a Master Seal. Her personal base stats are overall mediocre, even for a pre-chapter 11 unit, and her only standout growth is her personal 55% speed growth (75% in her Sword Fighter class). Her starting class doesn't do her much favors either, as Swordmaster and Hero are generally outclassed by other classes, especially Swordmaster where she is restricted to the Levin Sword at range, which attacks off of her low Magic stat.

Expending a Second Seal on Lapis can help her access classes that improve her combat over her initial choices. As with most physical units, her best classes are Warrior and Wyvern Knight; the former for the large strength boost, and the latter for the ability to fly. She will need some speed assistance in the form of a Speed + inherit, but her high speed growth will help her once she gets past her mediocre base. Her strength will not be impressive however, and she will want some assistance to keep up in the long term. She does have the benefit of being able to inherit skills from the emblems before chapter 11, which lets her use skills like Canter and Sword Power that later units won't be able to benefit from.

Lapis greatly appreciates an Emblem Ring that will fix her damage. Marth and Roy are typically the best earlygame options for that, both providing sizeable Strength boosts as well as useful skills to supplement her combat such as Divine Speed and Rise Above. In the midgame, Eirika can be a pretty good option for Lapis, providing either Lunar Brace or Bravery as damage boosting options with great returns.

There are three different variations of Lapis available in Heroes.

Personality

Lapis is a kind and good-natured soldier,[4] happy to spend time working with her allies,[17][18] though she puts on a tough persona to outsiders while serving as Alcryst's retainer.[19] Coming from an impoverished background, she has experience handling scarcity in the countryside; she is a capable forager,[20][21] knows many tricks to extend her food supply,[7][22][23] and wants to avoid wasting resources in general.[24][25] This has led her to become an exceptionally skilled and resourceful artisan,[26] able to create all kinds of objects[6]—even rather complex devices[27]—using nothing but everyday items.[28][29] She enjoys making these objects for others[30][31][32] and takes a certain sense of pride in her creations.[33][34] She has a passion for yams, which her parents harvest, often praising their taste and versatility.[35][36] As the farm she grew up on often suffered bear attacks, she began to train against them;[37][38] this, likely combined with the yams from her village being perfect for strength training[39] as well as her tough training regime in general,[40][41] resulted in her becoming incredibly strong despite her slim stature.[1][42] Despite this, she remains aware of the dangers bears pose and attempts to handle them with care.[43]

She is humble to a fault about her own accomplishments, seeing her achievements as underdog victories[44] and negatively comparing herself to others, most prominently when it comes to status.[45] She is very self-conscious about her rural upbringing, which she actively tries to hide from others,[37][46][47] as she believes a "country bumpkin" such as herself is unworthy to stand on equal level as the nobility surrounding her.[10][20] She suffers heavily from impostor syndrome, feeling a constant need to continue proving herself for Brodia[48] and believing others would view her as uninteresting[49] or weird[50] if they knew of her upbringing. Because she expects to be criticized or looked down upon, she does not know how to accept words of praise, particularly those aimed towards her rural aspects,[51][52] and does not handle them well[53][54]—however, she can come to accept them over time.[55][56] Her view on status does not extend to her equally rural family, of whom she is proud,[57] and actively supports their lifestyle in secret;[58] she merely has a difficult time confidently expressing pride towards her own rural heritage.[59] She also has a significantly easier time opening up about her roots towards other people of common birth.[37][38]

Lapis deeply admires her master Alcryst, hopelessly enamored with him (despite her protests to the contrary).[60] She sees him as a wonderful person[61] who she truly wants to protect,[62] swooning over his bravery during her duties[63] and able to list his best qualities for prolonged periods of time,[64] but criticizes his self-loathing and self-deprecation,[65] desperately wishing for him to be able to see in himself what she sees in him.[66]

Mighty Flower Lapis
Lapis traveled to war-torn towns and taught citizens how to repair their homes. At every stop, she left large, delicious potatoes from the farm in her home village.
The popularity of these "taters" brought her village wealth and prosperity, and earned Lapis a new title: "the Potato Goddess."

Divine Dragon Alear & Mighty Flower Lapis
Alear became the new Divine Dragon Monarch. His/Her bonds with the rulers of each nation resulted in lasting peace.
Lapis applied her craftiness to politics, and she and the new monarch were lauded for relating to common citizens' needs. As a hobby, she grew taters in Lythos.

Notes

  1. While the purpose of the tournament is not mentioned, a prior tournament was held with the explicit purpose of electing a retainer to Diamant.[8]

    Goldmary: Are they farmers?
Lapis: Mm-hmm. The land is infertile, though, so they're pretty poor. And bears are always roaming around, so we'd have to hunt them down and eat them.
Goldmary: That explains how you came to know so much about handling that bear situation.
Lapis: I learned a lot from dealing with those bears. Above all, I learned how to fight. Then I entered Brodia's fighting tourney—my ticket out of poverty. By winning the tourney, I earned a spot as Prince Alcryst's retainer. So you might say I have bears to thank for my success. Céline: Under normal circumstances, yes. In times of peace, what you say is very true. But in this time of hardships, nothing is certain. Your knowledge may prove useful. I suspect you have much more to teach, Lapis, and I am eager to absorb it all.

Lapis: I lied. I shouldn't have, but I did. Please don't tell anyone else, OK?
Citrinne: I won't. Of course I won't. But...I'm confused. Why would you lie about such a thing?
Lapis: I was trying to make myself seem less...you know...rural. I worry about that all the time. Prince Alcryst is royalty. You're part of his extended family. A bumpkin like me doesn't belong next to such noble company." — Lapis and Citrinne, B Support, Fire Emblem Engage

Lapis: Yeah... It took a couple of tries to figure things out. This one definitely holds up though. It'll work your arms, chest, core, and back." — Etie and Lapis, B Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  14. "Lapis: Prince Fogado, look at this! I've put the finishing touches on my rogue-repelling device. I call it...Fogado Mark II!
Fogado: It's...a dummy that looks like me. [...] As much as I admire the craftsmanship, do you really think this will scare off rogues?
Lapis: In the right light, I think it will be quite intimidating." — Lapis and Fogado, B Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  15. "Alcryst: In that case...what if we form an alliance of protection?
    Lapis: What does that mean?
Alcryst: It means I will vow to protect you...and accept your protection of me. And you'll do the same. That way, we both protect someone we care for and accept that we are cared for in return. [...] I vow to protect you, Lapis.

Céline: What's the harm in it? You seem to be suffering no ill effects.
Lapis: It's not that. It's... Well... See, I didn't get the tea leaves from a shop. I harvested them from a wild plant nearby.

  38. 38.0 38.1 "Goldmary: Yes, but...my parents have just informed me that the inn is having trouble with bears.
Lapis: Bears, huh? Ugh, they can be tricky to deal with. There's no time to lose. We'd better write up a letter telling your parents what to do.
Goldmary: But I don't know anything about bears. I have so many talents, but dealing with terrifying predators isn't one of them...
Lapis: Leave it to me. I'm from a village where we deal with them all the time, so I know my stuff. [...] I know lots of bear-management methods, from intimidation to good old-fashioned combat." — Goldmary and Lapis, C Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  39. "Lapis: I'm actually from a small, country town in Brodia. We grow taters—er, potatoes there. Sometimes my parents send me dried sweet-potato slices from the farm. They're so good.
Etie: Dried potatoes? From a remote part of Brodia? Is that what I think it is? The high-calorie, low-fat starch that's every musclehead's dream?!
Lapis: What? You've heard of these?
Etie: I had no idea where to find these things. I never thought they'd fall into my lap.
Lapis: Would you like to try one?
Etie: Are you kidding me? Yes! Yum! Just one delicious bite completely eased my muscle fatigue! I might seriously cry, Lapis." — Lapis and Etie, A Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  40. "Alear: So, what am I in for, Lapis? What's your usual training regimen?
Lapis: I start with some drills using different weapons, try a few practice swings...then do heavy lifting. I strap a weighted pack to my back and go for a long run. Sometimes I climb a mountain.
Alear: That...seems like it would build up an incredible amount of endurance." — Alear and Lapis, B Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  41. "Etie: It's so good that I have to wonder if you're into bodybuilding yourself.
Lapis: Kinda, but nothing fancy. I just lift rocks...like that one. Or that big guy over there.
Etie: Those rocks? With your noodly arms? How do you manage that? I can't picture it." — Etie and Lapis, B Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  42. "Chrom: You handled yourself remarkably well in that battle. You must have had grueling training.
Lapis: I got a lot stronger fighting bears." — Chrom and Lapis, C Bond, Fire Emblem Engage
  43. "Framme: Lapis, you have to take me bear hunting.
Lapis: Something tells me that you're not taking this seriously. Bears are really dangerous, you know.
Framme: I am serious. I really, really am. [...] Will you help me take that bear down, Lapis? Pleeease?
Lapis: Oh, Framme... All right. If you really are serious about this, I'll help you hunt that bear.
    Framme: Really?!
Lapis: But you'll need to listen carefully and follow my instructions. Wild bears are very dangerous." — Framme and Lapis, C Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  44. "You can do it, Divine One! Underdogs always find strength when they need it most—trust me!" — Lapis, Chapter 26, Fire Emblem Engage
  45. "Alear: Oh, Lapis! I wanted to thank you for all of your support in our recent battles.
Lapis: Oh, I didn't really do much out there. I was just following your lead. You don't have to thank me for that, Divine One. There were lots of other, more skilled warriors in those battles. You should thank them instead.
Alear: Lapis, please. You're strong and you think fast. You should have confidence in your abilities.
Lapis: Confidence? I don't know about that... I'm thrilled to be a retainer, but everyone else is much more qualified. I'm not even a noble. I wouldn't want to sound arrogant when I rank so far beneath everyone else." — Alear and Lapis, C Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  46. "Lapis: I had to make most things by hand back in the countryside.
    Alear: Countryside?
Lapis: Ah! Ahh! I...I meant, "can't decide!" I can't decide, uh, whether to make you a pack or not!" — Lapis and Alear, B Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  47. "Boucheron: Lapis, be honest with me. Are you from a poor village?
Lapis: ... Wh-what makes you say that?!
Boucheron: It was getting increasingly obvious.
Lapis: Oh no, no, no, no! That's no good! I don't want anyone to know. Especially not...him.
    Boucheron: "Him"?
Lapis: Gah! Forget I said anything! Please, just don't tell anyone about this!" — Boucheron and Lapis, A Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  48. "I'm finally getting the hang of this! Good thing too... I have to live up to Brodia's reputation." — Lapis, exploration dialogue, Fire Emblem Engage
  49. "An imperial princess like you probably finds an average person like me unimpressive." — Lapis to Veronica, C Bond, Fire Emblem Engage
  50. "Well... My family is, um...poor. Very poor. It's always made me feel like an outsider. Just being poor would be one thing. But I also like wild plant life, and I'm scary strong. I end up kind of...fixating on my weirdness. That makes it hard to feel confident." — Lapis to Rosado, A Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  51. "Alear: I think it's really amazing you can make those kinds of things.
Lapis: Ooh, please don't tease me like that. [...] ... It feels...strange to be complimented for such a modest skill." — Alear and Lapis, B Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  52. "Rosado: None of this sounds bad to me! You know tons about plants, you're super strong... That's great!
Lapis: When you put it that way, they almost do sound like positives, but...
Rosado: Still hard to talk about sometimes though, isn't it?
Lapis: Yeah." — Rosado and Lapis, A Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  53. "Alear: Be a little more kind to yourself, OK? Like I said, you've earned a bit of confidence.
Lapis: But... Well, Divine One, I... I'm not sure what to say to all of that. I'm not used to being complimented like this. I should go. Please excuse me." — Alear and Lapis, C Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  54. "Alcryst: However...there is one thing I'll stand by. I really do think that you're an amazing person, Lapis.
Lapis: That's not... I'm really not that amazing." — Alcryst and Lapis, B Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  55. "I should be thanking you, really. I've been down on myself for a long time. You helped me shake some of that off. Your kind words about my crafting skills made me feel more confident in myself." — Lapis to Alear, A Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  56. "Alear: What do you say, Lapis? Will you wear the Pact Ring?
Lapis: ... You know, there was a time when a situation like this would've had me fleeing in shame... But...I care about you, Divine One. And it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks." — Alear and Lapis, Ring Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  57. "My family isn't noble, but I'm proud of them. I can't ask them to hide where they're from. I'm still nervous about other people finding out, but at least I won't have to worry about you." — Lapis to Citrinne, A Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  58. "I know that you always send part of your pay back home to support your family." — Alcryst to Lapis, B Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  59. "Thank you, Rosado. Hearing you say all that, I'm feeling much more confident. One day I'll be able to say with pride, "I am who I am because of my hometown!" Maybe not, uh...anytime soon. But someday." — Lapis to Rosado, A Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  60. "Lapis: Do you think Prince Alcryst had this balance in mind when he selected us as his retainers?
Citrinne: Oh, I doubt it. I know you're enamored with him, but Alcryst isn't that clever.
    Lapis: What? I-I am not!
Citrinne: Goodness! You're blushing. Your cheeks are as red as the carpets in the royal court." — Lapis and Citrinne, A Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  61. "Alcryst: I can hardly believe I'm seeing you here. You must have appeared because you hate me. For saying I would protect you, when I couldn't.
Lapis: You're talking nonsense. I could never hate you. If the "me" of this world managed to keep you safe, then I'm sure she was satisfied. So please, don't be upset. [...] No matter where you end up, you will always be wonderful just the way you are." — Alcryst and Lapis, Fell Xenologue 3, Fire Emblem Engage
  62. "Lapis: I vow to protect you, Prince Alcryst!
    Alcryst: Lapis?
Lapis: Like I keep saying, I'm your retainer. Protecting you is my job. But I'm not doing this because I have to. I want to protect you.
Alcryst: Why in the world would you want to protect me? I'm not worth it.
Lapis: That! That right there. That's what I'm talking about when I say that you have no idea." — Alcryst and Lapis, A Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  63. "Alcryst: Such confidence. But I'm still concerned about casualties. I will protect you both.
Lapis: So brave... But, uh, as your retainers, it's really our job to protect you." — Alcryst and Lapis, Chapter 7, Fire Emblem Engage
  64. "Lapis: You're so, so perceptive. You always know so much about other people. Yet you choose to focus on each person's best qualities. You find skills no one else notices. I can't even count all the times you've lifted me up by reminding me what I'm good at. [...] You're skilled and kind and so charming... Yet you'd throw your life away to keep others safe—even the retainers who protect you. Do you really think that's supposed to make me happy?" — Lapis to Alcryst, A Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  65. "Lapis: This is the third time you've vowed to protect me like this, Prince Alcryst. [...] Hearing you say those words, it made me... ... Please stop trying to switch our duties like this. I'm just a retainer. You're a prince." — Lapis to Alcryst, C Support, Fire Emblem Engage
  66. "Alcryst: You're so much more valuable to this world than I am, Lapis. That's why I—
Lapis: That's why you keep saying that you should be protecting me. Oh... Prince Alcryst... You have no idea... It breaks my heart to hear you talk like this. I'm sorry... I have to go." — Alcryst and Lapis, B Support, Fire Emblem Engage
