Alfred is the eldest prince of Firene,[2] as well as the older brother of Princess Céline and son of Queen Ève. As a child, he suffered from an unnamed illness that has since passed its worst, but he still experiences the effects. While the Divine Dragon was asleep, Alfred would visit the Somniel, considering himself to be a close friend of them. At some unspecified point in time, Alfred received two retainers, Boucheron and Etie.

After attacks on Firene by the Corrupted, Alfred and his retainers left for Lythos to ask for Queen Lumera's help, but instead found Lythos Castle under attack from Elusia. After helping defend the castle, Alfred joins Alear, who in turn aids in the assault on Firene.

Fire Emblem Engage

Role

Alfred is a playable character. He joins automatically on turn 1 of Chapter 3. His personal classes are the mounted variant of Noble and its advanced version, Avenir. His personal skill, Self-Improver, grants him +2 strength for one turn when using the Wait command without attacking or using items; alongside that, his unique class Avenir grants him the skill Golden Lotus at level 5, which has a dexterity% chance to reduce physical damage taken during combat by 50%.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Alfred is the second cavalry-type unit who joins your team, along with Boucheron and Etie, shortly after the start of Chapter 3. As a mounted unit, he boasts superior mobility than his infantry peers, making him a solid candidate for Sigurd's Emblem Ring. He sports above average growth rates in many stats barring magic and resistance, allowing him to perform solidly in different physical-oriented classes once Second Seals become available. Alfred's main disadvantages are his rather low base stats; his low speed in particular gives him issues with follow-up attacking throughout much of the early game unless given significant speed investment and maybe some lucky build level ups, being weighed down by every lance in the game barring the Slim Lance. Not helping his case is that Chloé and Louis, two lance-locked units, join the chapter after Alfred is recruited, and both are immediately more useful right off the bat and are better users of Sigurd's ring than him. Amber is another lance specialist cavalier who is recruited much later in the game who competes with Alfred heavily. Scaled up to Amber's joining level, Alfred is behind on strength and speed by about 2.7 and 2.3 points, respectively, while his superior defense and resistance do not fix his issues as he is now liable to be doubled by faster enemies. While Alfred's high defense growth indicates that he is supposed to be a mobile physical tank, he cannot do the job well in the early-game due to his low bases until his growths take effect, which is made worse in Maddening due to the heavy drought of EXP. While he can become a competently solid unit with investment, he will face fierce competition from many early-game units who also desire EXP to grow stronger and would benefit more from the early Master Seals. Overall, this leaves a poor first impression of his performance.

If the player manages to overcome Alfred's rocky start and wishes to continue fielding him in the long run, they have various class options to give him to help him keep up with his team. While his unique Avenir class further accentuates his tank role, gives him a B and A rank in swords and lances, respectively (the latter in particular letting him use a Brave Lance), and will eventually grant him the Golden Lotus skill to give him a dexterity% chance of halving incoming damage, it may leave him unable to kill or tank attacks as effectively as the units dedicated to a single role. If one wants to have Alfred as a physical tank, then Great Knight would be a better option to class him for consistent high defense. Alternatively, if the player wants to push Alfred out of the tank role to kill enemies more reliably as a strong front-liner, classing him as a Wyvern Knight or Warrior is ideal. The Halberdier is also an enticing option, with its class skill, Pincer Attack, guaranteeing a follow-up if its skill conditions are met, mitigating any lingering speed issues he has. However, it requires decent set-up to do and other methods of aiding speed exist.

Quotes

Battle quotes

Alfred: You invaded my castle and threatened my mother. I'll slay you where you stand!
Nelucce: Oh, the prince of Flowerland is threatening me! I'm real scared!

— Alfred, when fighting Nelucce in Chapter 5.
Alfred: Wow, the khans fought in the arena for the right to rule? It's almost like fate brought us here.
Lucina: The khans didn't battle. They picked champions to fight on their behalf.
Alfred: Phew! If that is the case, I think it is fortunate that this place is not the true arena.
Lucina: Haha, indeed. Now, come at me!

— Alfred and Lucina in The Exalt.
Come and test your mettle. But there's no way you can defeat the Brash General.
— Corrupted Alfred in Fell Xenologue 2
Corrupted Alfred: Oh, Divine One... Seeing you in such a pitiful state breaks my heart. It's such a shame.
Alear: Alfred, please. Listen to me. I don't want to make things harder for you, but...
Corrupted Alfred: I bet you were told to say that. My old friend... Don't worry. I'll help you out. I'll erase you so utterly, not even your corpse will remain. No one will ever coerce you again.

— Corrupted Alfred against Alear in Fell Xenologue 2
Corrupted Alfred: Wait...are you...me? What's going on? Is this some sort of twisted illusion of the Fell Dragon?
Alfred: Hmmm... Looks like the Alfred in this world isn't so buff, either. Huh. I wonder if it's just hard for me to build muscle no matter which world I'm in...
Corrupted Alfred: What in the world is this trickery... If you're an illusion, I command you to vanish!
Alfred: Wow, guess he's got more vigor than I though. I'm looking forward to fight against myself.

— Corrupted Alfred against Alfred in Fell Xenologue 2
Corrupted Alfred: Etie! First the Divine Dragon, and now you. Why are only those closest to me reappearing? I couldn't even look at the flowers I left in your memory. It was too hard.
Etie: Forgive me. As your retainer, I should have been there to protect you until the end. I know how hard it is for you to see me like this. Let's finish this battle, and I'll leave you in peace.
Corrupted Alfred: Etie, my strong and noble retainer. Please rest easy...

— Corrupted Alfred against Etie in Fell Xenologue 2
Corrupted Alfred: Boucheron?! You're one of the Corrupted too? I wanted to see you on the battlefield one more time but...not like this...
Boucheron: Prince Alfred... Is the "me" of this world already...
Corrupted Alfred: You died defending me, and now I have to kill you myself? Damn you, Nel and Nil! But even if you are Corrupted, I hope these words reach you. You were a dear friend.
Boucheron: I am sure the "me" of this world would be grateful to hear that...

— Corrupted Alfred against Boucheron in Fell Xenologue 2
Corrupted Alfred: Céline? Why are you fighting with the enemy? No, my eyes must be deceiving me...
— Corrupted Alfred against Céline in Fell Xenologue 2
Corrupted Céline: They made a Corrupted that looks like Alfred? How vile!
— Alfred against Corrupted Céline in Fell Xenologue 2
I'm so happy... Everyone's here, just like the old times. The truth is, I'd always hoped...
— Corrupted Alfred in Fell Xenologue 6.
