— Tailtiu

Tailtiu (pronounced /ˈtɑltju/[key][1]; Japanese: ティルテュ Tailto) was the middle child of Duke Reptor of the Friege dukedom of Grannvale. Uninterested in her father's avaricious schemes and opposition to the Chalphy family, she accompanied Duke Claud of Edda to Agustria as a bodyguard, and with him joined the army of Sigurd of Chalphy in fighting the Orgahil pirates, in exile to Silesse and in their ill-fated march on Grannvale to clear Sigurd's name.

Biography

Six months into Sigurd's occupation of Agustria, Tailtiu accompanied Claud to Agustria to confer with Sigurd, where she expressed her disinterest in her father's behavior. She then followed Claud to Tower of Bragi, and the two emerged from it after Sigurd defeated Chagall at Sylvale Castle. With the Orgahil pirates running rampant in the area, she protected Claud until the two could return to Sigurd's group.

Tailtiu survived the Battle of Belhalla, after which she fled to Silesse with her children, Arthur and Tine. Though she successfully spent years in hiding there, she and Tine were eventually discovered and captured by her brother Bloom, leaving Arthur behind[2]; Tailtiu and Tine were imprisoned and subjected to the care of Bloom's wife Hilda, whose years of constant abuse resulted in Tailtiu's death.[3][4]

Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War

Role

Tailtiu is a playable character during the first generation. In Chapter 3, she, along with Claud, appear as player units next to the Tower of Bragi after Sylvale has been seized. She is available up until the end of Chapter 5. If she is married and alive at the end of Chapter 5, Arthur and Tine will be available in the second generation. Otherwise, Amid and Linda will replace them.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

As a unit

Tailtiu joins in Chapter 3 of Genealogy of the Holy War during the first generation. Her base level is only 3, so she needs a significant amount of experience to reach promotion. Tailtiu has Wrath innately, which guarantees critical hits when she is below 50% HP, and minor Thrud blood, which combined with her class as a Thunder Mage, gives her an A weapon rank in thunder magic, allowing her to immediately make use of the powerful Thoron tome she starts with, which has 20 might. While Thoron is somewhat inaccurate at 70 hit, Tailtiu's base skill is very high—she has 100 hit with Thoron at base, and many enemies have low or negative avoid—and she has a great skill growth that is boosted by her Thrud Holy blood, and a high luck growth, mitigating Thoron's accuracy flaw. When Wrath is active, Tailtiu can one-shot most enemies with Thoron; at base, she has 60 attack when critting, which is enough to one-shot every enemy present in her joining chapter except the Warriors. However, activating Wrath requires that she remain at low HP, and she can't take more than one hit from physical attacks; she has a decent speed growth, but her base avoid is too low to rely on dodging—additionally, her durability is extremely poor, and will likely never significantly improve, as she can't take more than one hit until promotion. Her class also has a downside compared to other similar classes, as she cannot use any fire or wind tomes until promotion, which prevents her from taking advantage of the wind tomes' lighter weight. She also has a poor magic growth, has no access to Follow-Up and doesn't have Critical either, meaning that she cannot double and has to rely on Wrath to land a critical hit and kill enemies in one hit if they weren't already weakened by another unit, which will put her at risk of death.

Tailtiu is permanently restricted to foot movement, limiting her range and usefulness. Without a mount, a player would have to restrain their mounted units considerably for Tailtiu to contribute on the battlefield or give her the Leg Ring—a highly valuable and competitive item. In combat, Tailtiu can provide significant damage against the mostly low-resistance foes. Tailtiu can gain up to six level-ups by rescuing villagers in Chapter 4, as most of the player's other units may not need as many levels at that point. Tailtiu can also gain a lot of experience when she joins, as she does so alongside Claud (who can heal her) and surrounded by enemy pirates; the only other unit near Tailtiu who can fight the pirates is Brigid—Brigid is already promoted, in less need of experience, and cannot retaliate against all of the pirates on enemy phase, but is significantly more durable than Tailtiu (Tailtiu dies after two hits from the weakest of the pirates, whereas Brigid dies in four from the strongest).

Tailtiu's combat is hampered by her lack of Follow-Up, preventing her from doubling enemies. While she can kill most enemies with a critical hit, not every enemy will die to it, Tailtiu may not always be at low HP and exploiting Wrath is very risky due to her poor survivability. She does gain Adept upon promotion to War Mage, but it is not a reliable replacement for Follow-Up. Additionally, Tailtiu suffers from weapon triangle disadvantage against the wind mages throughout Chapter 4, as she can only use thunder tomes before promotion.

Tailtiu's promotion gives her some statistical bonuses—including a point of movement—and access to staves, magic types other than thunder, and swords. Tailtiu can use the magical swords, but her strength is low and she is frail, limiting her ability to fight most enemies at 1-range with them.

As a mother

As a mother, Tailtiu's two magical children can vary drastically in quality. Azelle provides the most straightforward boost to both Arthur and Tine, granting both children Follow-Up and minor Fjalar blood. Combined with Tailtiu's minor Thrud blood, Arthur and Tine will have very solid magic, skill, luck, and speed on top of improved Fire and Thunder ranks. Lewyn is the other good magical father; he passes Major Forseti blood and the Forseti tome to Arthur. Arthur is arguably the best user of Forseti (over Ced and Coirpre), as he joins very early in the second generation and gains a mount upon promotion; Arthur will not have Follow-Up, but the Forseti blood and tome give him enough speed to activate Adept reliably, and he can use the Follow-Up Ring. However, Tine receives less benefit: minor Forseti blood allows her to use Tornado after promotion, but Critical can be redundant with Wrath and Tine already gains Adept upon promotion. Claud, while he is recruited with Tailtiu and is magic-oriented, does not make a good father for either child. Claud cannot pass his staves to either child, as Arthur cannot use staves and Tine only gains access to them on promotion; the additional staff rank from Bragi blood will give Tine access to Rescue and Fortify, but she is not the best user of either. Claud also passes no skills to the children, which hinders their potential even further. A less conventional set of options are Lex and Arden, whose primary trait of note is passing down Vantage. Vantage and Wrath are fully compatible in this game, and as such, a unit with both skills and at low HP will always strike first and deliver a critical hit, making them extremely good at defeating many enemies on enemy phase. The price of this is consigning both children to have a low Magic stat, but in reality, neither of them need much of anything in the way of stats. Arthur will still have a rough start due to being too weak to OHKO enemies even with a Magic Ring and having only C-rank tomes for use as Tine carries the only Elthunder in the game, although Lex's Paragon fixes this somewhat. Regardless, on promotion, Thoron access gives them so much firepower that they can reliably OHKO generic enemies up until the Endgame, by which point even 1 or 2 Magic levels would have been enough to patch things up.

Fire Emblem Heroes

Main article: Tailtiu/Heroes

There are two different variations of Tailtiu available in Heroes.

Personality

Prior to her incarceration, Tailtiu was upbeat, flighty, loud-mouthed, slightly short-tempered and blunt, willing to express her opinion on matters without caring for tact, particularly when bored.[5] Despite her exterior, she was easily concerned about the opinions others held about her, particularly in the context of her father's status as the nemesis of her allies in Sigurd's army.[6] She and Azelle of Velthomer were close friends since their childhood.[7]
