I... I don't know what to do anymore... Oh... Mother... What would you do...
— Linda

Linda (Japanese: リンダ Linda) is a noblewoman of Grannvale's Friege family, and is the daughter of the late Lady Ethnia. Following her mother's demise, Linda reluctantly served her uncle Bloom as a warrior fighting on the behalf of the Grannvale Empire in the Munster District, but defected upon meeting her long-lost brother Amid and joined Seliph's liberation army.

Linda is Tine's substitute character, filling her role in the story and gameplay if Tailtiu died or failed to be married in the course of the first generation.

Biography

Linda was born during Ethnia's exile in Silesse following the events of the Battle of Belhalla, and for a short time she lived there in hiding with her mother and her elder brother, Amid. However, when Linda was still very young, Ethnia's elder brother Bloom arrived in Silesse and found them, abducting Ethnia and Linda while inadvertently leaving Amid behind.[1] The two were taken to Ulster, the seat of Bloom's rule over the Munster District, and imprisoned in the castle, where they were subjected to years of constant abuse and torment from Bloom's wife Hilda. Following her mother's demise, Linda was left with a single pendant as a memento of her.

By Grann 777, long after Ethnia's death, Linda had entered Bloom's employ as one of his chief fighters in the Munster District. However, despite her service to Bloom, she frequently broke rank to assist the villagers suppressed by Bloom's rule.[2] Late in the siege of Leonster following its recapture by Leif, Bloom deployed Linda as the leader of a small unit of mages to launch an attack on the western Fort Melgen, which had recently been captured by Seliph. During this skirmish she encountered Amid, who upon spotting her pendant identified her as his sister and convinced her to join him on Seliph's side. She continued to serve under Seliph for the rest of the war, eventually pitting herself against both Bloom and Hilda in the name of avenging her mother.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Despite being a substitute unit, which is typically weaker than their non-substitute counterpart, Linda is generally better than Tine. Firstly, unlike Tine, she has A rank in thunder magic at base level, allowing her to use the Thoron tome before promotion; since the Thoron tome is accessible in the same chapter, this improves Linda's combat significantly from the start. She has Wrath, just like Tine, which guarantees critical hits when the user is below half HP; taking advantage of this skill is risky, since Linda's durability will always be poor, but with the Thoron tome, she reliably OHKO's basically everything, except for a few extremely bulky bosses, as well as those with Nihil. With a Magic Ring, even the Endgame's Ishtar is fair game to be OHKO'd. Additionally, Wrath enables Linda to clear enough of the arena with her Elthunder to afford Thoron on her join chapter. Finally, Linda has Paragon, which increases her experience game; since she joins underleveled, only at level 3 in Chapter 7, having Paragon helps her catch up with the rest of the army and allows her to reach her promotion much faster than she would otherwise.

Linda still has flaws outside of poor durability. She is unmounted, and mounted units dominate Genealogy of the Holy War, so even though her combat can be good with Wrath, she will fall behind and rarely get to use it unless the player plays slowly. Her promotion does not fix the issue, and it is a mediocre promotion overall; it gives Linda an additional point of movement, the ability to use staves, fire tomes, and wind tomes at B rank, statistical bonuses, and Adept. Adept is not a perfect substitute for Follow-Up, which Linda can never obtain without using the Follow-Up Ring. She is still best at using thunder tomes with Wrath, so the weapon ranks in other magic schools and swords are useless. The ability to use staves, however, is useful, as B level is enough to use strong staves such as Warp and Return, and thanks to not needing the Paragon Ring she will usually have more money to buy them than other units.

Tine's main advantage over Linda is the ability to gain inheritance and her better growth rates. However, Tine can't inherit anything particularly notable that Linda doesn't already have or can't already do, regardless of father; Linda has Paragon built-in, doesn't need any other skills or stats to do her job well enough, and Tine can't use Thoron at all until she promotes. It should be noted that to obtain Linda, one must also have Amid, who is a much worse substitute for Arthur than Linda is for Tine; in a sense, to get Linda, one must give up on Arthur's benefits. If the player is willing to do that, however, they will find Linda better than Tine in some aspects, making her worth the sacrifice to some.

Personality

As a result of the years of abuse she suffered, Linda was initially very meek and submissive, obeying Bloom's commands and shrugging off his taunts to avoid further torment.[3] After meeting Amid and joining Seliph, while still timid and quiet, she quickly became more assertive and determined to right the wrongs she and her family had inflicted upon the world by properly helping its people.[4] While still initially terrified of Bloom and Hilda, she nonetheless worked past this out of sheer determination to avenge Ethnia. She also, however, maintained that most of her family was not evil even when Amid still lusted for vengeance, insisting that Bloom, Ishtore and Ishtar were always decent to her and that she didn't wish to fight the latter.[5] She quickly developed an extremely close bond with and respect for Amid upon meeting him.

When I was little, my mother and my newborn sister disappeared... I was left behind with nothing but this pendant. I only recently learned what really happened. It was King Bloom of Ulster. He abducted them. He took my family from me. The rumors I've heard all said Mother had died a while ago, but they also said my sister is still alive... 2. "Bloom's got some terrifying warriors on his side. There's Banba, Fotla and Eriu, a trio of powerful sorceress sisters. Then there's Linda, a young mage... Bloom's niece she may be, but that girl's still got a kind heart on her. She's come to our aid and the aid of our neighbor villages time and again... She's nothing like her family..." — A villager in Chapter 7, Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War
  3. "Bloom: Everything depends on you. Linda. You, too, will deploy at once.
Linda: ...Y-yes, uncle. As you wish...
Bloom: Hmph... One would think I could expect more gratitude from someone I raised out of the goodness of my heart after their mother died. Or have you forgotten my many kindnesses?
