Vanessa (Japanese: ヴァネッサ Vanessa) is a pegasus knight who appears in Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones. She hails from Frelia, and is the younger sister of Syrene. She is quite loyal to her country, and harbors a crush on her prince, Innes.
Biography

Vanessa grew up in Frelia, alongside her parents and her older sister Syrene. When her father collapsed one day, she was the only one to remain level-headed and gathered nuts to sell at the village for medicine, which led to his recovery and was part of what inspired Syrene to join the knights of Frelia.[2] Looking up to her sister in turn, Vanessa became determined to become a pegasus knight as well[3]—while she also longed to practice magic,[4] she gave up on the idea once she found she lacked the talent to pursue the craft.[3]
She eventually did join the pegasus knights of Frelia with her pegasus Titania, working her way up to becoming captain,[5] as well as one of King Hayden's most trusted vassals.[6] After the fall of Renais, she was one of the soldiers ordered to accompany Princess Eirika to Renvall, alongside Moulder and Gilliam. She would continue to fight alongside the soldiers of Renais during their campaign against Grado and, eventually, the Demon King. During this time, she joined back up with Syrene and was given a battle amulet of the war god Fale from her father, which he had been unable to give himself due to her sudden leave.[1]
After the war, Vanessa returned to Frelia to continue her duties as a pegasus knight.[7] Depending on which connections she strengthened during the war, she either vowed to always remain with her sister,[8] married the cavalier Forde,[9] or moved into Castle Frelia and eventually raised a child with Innes.[10]

Analysis
| This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience. |
Vanessa is a level 1 Pegasus Knight who joins in Chapter 2. Vanessa is the only flier available until Tana in Chapter 9, and is the only unit capable of providing flying utility until then. As a flier, Vanessa can ignore most terrain, and can rescue most units to carry them over such terrain. For example, in Chapter 2, she can rescue Ross to bring him to Eirika over the mountain range, and can visit the Pure Water village in the bottom left corner of the map.
Vanessa has high base speed and decent base strength, allowing her to contribute early on in combat. The low quality of enemies in The Sacred Stones allows her to gain experience through combat quickly. However, Vanessa does not have particularly high HP or defense and cannot usually withstand multiple attacks; bow-users will deal effective damage and will typically be able to kill her in one shot, though her bow weakness can be negated with the Fili Shield. Her strength is also problematic, with neither her base nor growth being particularly high.
As a Pegasus Knight, Vanessa promotes with an Elysian Whip, the first of which can be obtained in Chapter 8, by which time Vanessa can reliably reach level 10. Promoting Vanessa does not come at the expense of other fliers, as Cormag has an Elysian Whip in his inventory, and they can be obtained in a Secret Shop in Chapter 14. Her ability to fly over terrain will make her very useful for the game's terrain-heavy maps. This is especially notable in Eirika's route, where her only competition for her flying utility before Cormag joins in chapter 13 is Tana, who joins at a lower level with worse stats than a trained Vanessa.
Vanessa has the option to promote to Falcon Knight or Wyvern Knight. While Falcon Knight gives Vanessa access to E-rank swords and has better defensive stats, Wyvern Knight improves her constitution by 4 instead of 1, improving her attack speed in more cases. Vanessa's base constitution is very low, and she will be weighed down by most weapons, particularly lances; promoting her to Wyvern Knight mitigates the problem. Falcon Knight Vanessa can wield swords to work around her lower constitution, but swords pair poorly with Vanessa's aforementioned strength issues, with the higher constitution making it easier for her to use strong but heavy weapons like the Steel Lance. Wyvern Knight also grants Vanessa the Pierce skill, which gives her a chance to make an attack that ignores the enemy's defense. While sword access will help Vanessa against axe users, the low weapon rank greatly hinders their usefulness, and if she wants weapon triangle advantage she can equip an Axereaver.

Personality
Vanessa is a sincere, serious girl. She does her best when fighting, but according to Syrene she is too serious. She is slightly shy, and has a crush on Prince Innes. She envies her older sister Syrene, because she thinks that Syrene is better all around, showing that Vanessa seems to have little self-confidence. However, according to Syrene, she has a great deal of "inner fortitude". Although she acts serious, when talking, she seems to relax and be able to act less nervous. According to Forde, her "energy" is warm and refreshing.
When her father fell ill, she was the first to act even when her mother and Syrene didn't know what to do, selling nuts to buy medicine which helped save her father. Vanessa seems to be rather high in the ranks of Frelia, since she attended King Hayden's birthday ceremony, and Innes still remembers Vanessa first joining the pegasus knights.

Trivia
- Despite the fact that Tana and Vanessa can perform the Triangle Attack together (along with Syrene, who happens to be able to have a support with Tana), Tana and Vanessa cannot support with each other.
- Her pegasus is named Titania, coincidentally the same English as Titania, a character in Path of Radiance, though the character from Path of Radiance is named Tiamat in the Japanese version.
