Frey (Japanese: フレイ Frey) is a cavalier in the Fire Emblem series, appearing in Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon and Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem.

Biography

Frey was a knight of Altea present at Altea Castle when Gra invaded the kingdom during the War of Shadows in 602 AC.[1] He followed Princess Elice's request, along with Abel, to protect Prince Marth during his escape. Accomplishing such, Frey accompanied his fellow royal knights and the prince to the isle of Talys. Two years later,[2] Frey would leave the island with Marth's forces and participate in his prince's successful campaign to liberate the continent. After the war's conclusion, Frey helped rebuild Altea.

In New Mystery of the Emblem, Frey was described to have acted as a decoy to save Marth during his escape from Altea.[3] Chased by Gra's main force near the eastern prison, Frey disguised as Marth to lure the enemy away. Presumed dead, the main force left Frey with a grave wound;[3][4] though on the brink of death, he survived for multiple days.[4] Afterwards, he was stricken with amnesia and he lived with a different identity[4] until regaining his memories a few years later.[5] Once he fully recovered, he returned to Marth[5] and bore a scar from this experience.[6]

One year after the War of Shadows,[7] Frey acted as a lecturer to the 7th Platoon. Later, in 607 AC,[8] the outbreak of the War of Heroes occurred and the Holy Empire of Archanea invaded Altea—concurrent to an expedition Marth and a knight division were fulfilling for the empire. Frey and Norne managed to escape Altea Castle and arrive at Arverne Castle to join with Marth's forces. Frey remained a member of this army to the War of Heroes's conclusion, continued being an Altea knight afterwards, along with tasking himself in instructing future knights.

Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon

Role

In Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon, Frey is a newly introduced character. He and Abel survive Gra's initial attack, and Princess Elice orders them to protect Marth. He and Abel join him, and escape Altea with the aid of fellow knights Cain and Jagen. However, the group is cornered by Jiol and the Grust Sable Knights. As canonically defined by New Mystery of the Emblem, Frey sacrifices himself to save the group by disguising himself as Marth and luring them away. Frey is apparently killed, but he survives the battle. He lives out the rest of the War of Shadows as an amnesiac, but eventually regains his memories and returns to Altea after the war. If the player chooses to use someone else as a decoy, he joins Marth in his exile to Talys and accompanies him through the War of Shadows.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Frey is a new character exclusive to Normal difficulty. Frey is an extremely reliable and dependable unit with good bases for his level, above-average growth rates all-around, and a very good chance of making it to C lances for Ridersbane access by the end of Chapter 4. As the game progresses, he will only get stronger, turning into one of your main powerhouses throughout the story. Frey should be an automatic pick for any Normal mode runthrough, and the only bad thing to say about him is that he can't be used on Hard.

Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem

Role

Frey continued to serve Marth as a knight of Altea after the War of Shadows. He became a teacher to future Altean knights, including Kris. Left behind to defend Altea as Marth embarked to suppress the insurrection in Grust led by General Lang, Frey and Norne were present during Emperor Hardin's invasion of Altea. Fleeing from Altea Castle, Frey and Norne reunited with Marth at Arverne Castle in Grust and joined him in the battle against Lang. After the War of Heroes concluded, Frey returned to Altea and continued to serve as a knight and a teacher.

Analysis

This character analysis section may not be accurate to every player's experience.

Frey is the fifth Cavalier to join the player's army (sixth if the player chose to make Kris a Cavalier). He also joins soon after Sirius, a pre-promoted Paladin. His growth rates are comparable to those of Luke, Roderick, and Cecil who join earlier, though Frey's growths outshine those of Matthis, who joins in Chapter 3. Frey's bases are altogether balanced. His base 11 Strength is just one point lower than Sirius' base Strength and one point higher than Arran's. Frey joins at level 8, meaning he needs to gain only 2 levels in order to promote. He also comes with a respectable C rank in lances (which will serve him well if he is re-classed into a Dracoknight), as well as a Killer Lance, which--even in Frey himself does not make use of it--can be put to good use by units like Sirius, Palla, Catria, or Arran, all of whom can use the Killer Lance at base. He also provides support bonuses to Palla, which can be situationally helpful for boosting Palla's hit, avoid, crit, and crit avoid. While not outstanding by any means, Frey can be decent filler with some niche utility.

Frey is shown to be a very honorable and courageous knight. He is extremely loyal to Marth, willing to sacrifice his own life for the prince's sake. After the War of Shadows, he is forced into the role of an educator, instructing and lecturing new Altean knights. He proves to be a skilled teacher and becomes a mentor to Kris. Frey seems to carry some amount of shame regarding the wounds he sustained while acting as a decoy to allow Marth to escape from Altea Castle. He tries to hide the pain of his wounds from Kris and is hesitant to divulge their origins to his former student.

Trivia

  • Due to Frey not being present in the original story of Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon & the Blade of Light nor the Hard Mode of Shadow Dragon (where the Prologue is skipped), he is considered to be the canonical "sacrifice" used in the Prologue of Shadow Dragon. This was confirmed in Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem in Frey's conversations with Kris, where Frey states that though he was severely injured by Gra's forces, he lives to tell the tale.
  • In Shadow Dragon, Frey's character ending is listed at the end of the Epilogue regardless of whether he was the sacrifice or not, while everyone else's endings are listed in the order that they are recruited.
