Reference Search
How to search the references
There are two different ways to search, searching the reference string or searching the full text.
Searching Reference
Searching the reference string searches the full reference string - article/book name, publisher, authors, etc.
Searching Full Text
Searching full text searches the text of the actual document - this may be a PDF that is available for download or an index of a document that is not available.
Complex Searches
You can search for an exact phrase by putting the phrase in double quotes.
Double-quotes are also essential when searching for hyphenated names or names containing other special characters, eg:
"Agardite-(Ce)"
You can exclude a word (or phrase) from a search by either using the - character or the word not. Some examples below:
"Red Cloud Mine" not arizona
feldspar pseudomorph -kaolinite
"cornwall mine" cobalt
Advanced Mode
Clicking the 'advanced' button reveals further search options. These are explained below:
| Type: | This is the type of record, eg Journal Article, Book, etc. |
|---|---|
| Year | (From/To) This allows you to define a date range. You do not need to fill in both. |
| DDC: | To search the library classification number based on the Dewey Decimal System. |
| LCC: | To search the library classification number based on the Library of Congress System. |
| Publisher: | The publisher name (or part of it), so 'Spring' will match 'Springer Verlag' and others |
| Author: | The author name. Note that you need to search this in reverse format, eg Doe, John - or just enter a surname. |
| Viewable: | Not all files are available for download - this checkbox limits results to files that are available on the server for download. |
