Joachim (Japanese: ヨアヒム Joachim) is a character in Fire Emblem Shadows. Coming from the bloodline of the goddess Fenris, Joachim first appears in Book 2, of which he is the protagonist.

Biography

Background

Joachim comes from a family descended from Fenris, referred to as the 13th bloodline. Though they used to serve Fenris in the past, the family turned their backs on the goddess of shadow and went into hiding.[1] Joachim's mother was aware that Joachim might join Fenris and bring about great destruction, which is why she often contemplated killing him when he was a child.[2] In his youth, Joachim faced harsh rejection from others because of his heritage. He would be hit with rocks, and nearly died multiple times.[3]

At some point when he was still a child, Joachim ended up in an orphanage in a small mountain village in Tournu. Under the care of Micaela, he was raised alongside Estel and many other children, who accepted him into their fold without prejudice.[3] Joachim initially distrusted the people of the orphanage, resulting in him running away into the forest. After he lost his way in the woods, Estel came to save him and guide him back. From that point onward, Joachim considered Estel his personal hero.[4] As he grew up, Joachim began to help around the orphanage himself, tending to the fields and harvest,[5] as well as cooking[6] and laundry.[7]

Book 2: Wolf Brother

He lived in peace with the others until the day the bandit Bartolomeus attacked the village. Though Joachim tried to fight the bandits, he was defeated and gravely wounded, and thus unable to prevent the bandits from burning down the village and killing the orphans. He was patched up by Hati and Skoll, retainers to Fenris. The two tried to convince him to make a pact with Fenris, though Joachim refused. Joachim fought Bartolomeus once more, and was defeated once more. Since he was knocked out and awoke to all the bandits torn limb from limb, Skoll and Hati told Joachim that he was the one to kill them after giving in and making a pact. This misconception persisted at the very least until he met with Estel, who had escaped capture.

Micaela rejoined Joachim and Estel alongside Yuni and Erma, an envoy of Naga and a knight of Tournu respectively. Yuni declared that the bandits had been killed by a disciple of shadow within the group of five. Believing the disciple of shadow is himself, Joachim attempted to fool Yuni by laying fake tracks, though she saw through the deception. Eventually, Joachim's lies could not hold up under Erma's interrogation, and Joachim fled.

Yuni followed and confronted him, at which point Joachim confessed to meeting Fenris' retainers. Unable to prove his innocence, Joachim asked for Erma to kill him just in case, which forced the true disciple of shadow, Estel, to show her hand to save him. Joachim and Estel engaged in a final contest to decide which of them should live; whoever struck the other first would win. However, Estel did not try to strike Joachim at all, and simply let him kill her.

With Estel dead and his home destroyed, Joachim decided to stay with Yuni and Erma and hunt down other disciples of shadow. He now aimed to prove himself worthy of a pact with Naga, so he might use his wish to revive Estel.

Personality

Joachim is greatly influenced by his heritage, and the prejudice he faced as a result of it. He consistently underestimates his own capabilities,[8] and has trouble asking others for help in fear of being a burden.[7] Connected to that, he also tries to make himself useful as much as he can, even going so far as to request additional work, both to repay the villagers for all they have done for him, and because he believes they do not need him if he is not useful. Despite the kindness he has experienced from the villagers and the orphanage, Joachim believes that he, as a descendant of Fenris with the potential to bring about ruin, does not deserve to be happy, and that others may wish for his happiness is a foreign concept to him.[9]

Regardless of his upbringing, Joachim is kindhearted and honest. He wishes to continue living in peace with his family as he has been, with no desire for great accomplishments.[8] He is determined in the face of danger, and does not hesitate to do what he believes is right, whether it be facing a foe surpassing him in strength, or striking down a loved one who has fallen to shadow.[10] Despite his wariness of the shadows, Joachim takes others' words at face value, which is taken advantage of by Fenris' retainers tricking him into thinking he has made a pact with Fenris, when he merely had no memory because he had passed out.[11] Additionally, Yuni is able to string him along through bluffing, and is only disarmed by Joachim's sincerity.[12] He seems to struggle thinking when put on the spot, and is a poor liar incapable of keeping his story straight, especially under pressure.[13]

Joachim's most important relationships are to Micaela, the orphanage's caretaker, and Estel, his childhood friend. Micaela considers Joachim and Estel family, and takes care of Joachim when he pushes himself, insisting that he does not have to prove his use to her. She was the first to insist to Joachim that he is deserving of happiness.[9] Estel, on the other hand, is his hero, after she lead him back to the orphanage when he ran away in his youth.[4] The two are dear friends and rivals, frequently engaging in contests of speed and strength, which Estel always won.[14] Though Estel considers her dreams of being a hero childish, Joachim supports her dream, sometimes unintentionally teasing Estel with his honesty.[15] Joachim often feels that he is relying on her too much and considers her better than himself,[8] though he also supports Estel in return. Estel is seen as the more "outdoorsy" of the two, with Joachim taking care of the chores at home.[6]

Following Estel's death at his own hands, Joachim has decided on a new determination: that the shadow beasts he feared are only suffering people, and that he will free them from Fenris' nightmare.[10]

His shadow form presents a version of Joachim who took Hati and Skoll up on their deal. Fueled by a need for revenge for his slain family, this Joachim has embraced his nature as a merciless beast and a true wolf.[16]

  5. "Micaela: How did the fields look?
Joachim: The cold weather ruined about half of them, but the rest made it through. Here's today's harvest.
Micaela: Thank you, Joachim. It looks like we are having potato soup tonight. The children will all be delighted." — Joachim and Micaela in Book 2, light Chapter 1: Village Life, Fire Emblem: Shadows

Estel: Hey, don't worry about it! We all have our strengths. Leave anything outdoorsy to me!
Joachim: Got it. Well, a promise is a promise. Tonight's dinner is carrot steak.
Estel: Yay! Let's go eat! Ah, hold on—I forgot to check the trap. I should make sure it isn't broken.
Joachim: Right. In that case, I'll head home and prepare dinner. It's getting dark, so be careful on your way back, OK?" — Joachim and Estel in their C Support, Fire Emblem: Shadows

Estel: This is nothing! Heck, I could say the same for you, Joachim. It's OK to ask for help, you know.
Joachim: Well, our teacher is reading to the kids at the orphanage. It didn't seem right to interrupt that to do laundry.
Estel: Oh, Joachim... Why do you always take these things on by yourself?
    Joachim: Sorry...
Estel: It's not something to apologize for. You have a good heart, so you put others before yourself. But kindness alone will only take you so far in this world." — Joachim and Estel in their B Support, Fire Emblem: Shadows
  8. 8.0 8.1 8.2 "Joachim: Yeah. So, my dream... Just to live in peace, I guess.
    Estel: Huh? Is that it?
Joachim: It is. I don't feel a need to accomplish something grand or be something I'm not. Besides, there's not much I'm really good at. No matter what I do, I won't ever be as good as you, Estel.
Estel: Hold on. That's not true. Joachim, you're one of the kindest people I've ever met.
Joachim: Thanks, Estel. Don't get me wrong. I'm not belittling myself. Even if there's nothing special about me, I'm content with that. I've enjoyed just being able to live with all of you. I'd be happy with more of the same. I want to live quietly... Peacefully. That's my dream." — Joachim and Estel in Book 2, shadow Chapter 10: To Live in Peace, Fire Emblem: Shadows
  9. 9.0 9.1 "Joachim: Um, Teacher? Estel's coming home soon. I better do the chores.
Micaela: Out of the question, Joachim—the children will help. You need your rest. We're family. You don't have to prove your usefulness to us. What matters is that we help each other.
Joachim: But...I need a purpose, don't I? A reason you keep me around?
Micaela: Is this because of your connection to the Demon Wolf Fenris?
Joachim: Well, yes. I'm a member of her...pack. I don't deserve to be happy.
Micaela: Listen, Joachim. It doesn't matter if the shadow runs through your veins. That doesn't make you evil. We are defined by our actions, not our blood. And even a wolf can be kind.
Joachim: You're a bit strange, Teacher. No one else has ever said anything like that to me." — Joachim and Micaela in their A Support, Fire Emblem: Shadows
  10. 10.0 10.1 "Joachim: By the way, what does it take to become a disciple of light?
Yuni: It all depends on the revelation, but a lot of it involves working against Fenris and her retainers. Which means fighting those who've fallen to shadow. Will that...be difficult for you?
Joachim: You don't need to worry. Ever since that day, I've been ready.
Yuni: I suppose that's true. It must have been so hard for you... But Joachim, you're strong. I know you have what it takes to walk the path of light.
Joachim: I appreciate that. But there are other reasons I've decided to fight. These beasts of shadow, the ones I've feared so much... They're just people who've suffered. That suffering—I want to end it. I want to wake them from that wolf's nightmare." — Joachim and Yuni in their B Support, Fire Emblem: Shadows
  11. "Skoll: Hold your secrets close. Keep 'em fooled, and kill 'em before they can kill you. Good luck.
Joachim: W-wait! I... No, no. I... I didn't want this. All I wanted was... I wanted revenge... I wanted them dead... Is this my punishment? I’ve been warned all my life, "Don’t be seduced by the shadow." And yet, I have fallen into darkness...a disciple of shadow..." — Skoll and Joachim in Book 5, light Chapter 5: Kill or Be Killed, Fire Emblem: Shadows
  12. "Yuni: I accused you of being a disciple of shadow. Then tried to convince you your only recourse is to eliminate me. Yet you do nothing. If you were a disciple of shadow, you would be very powerful. I told you I saw you making those footprints, but... That was a lie. Something I made up to threaten you. You saw through it. [...] Maybe you are innocent as you say. I don't know what the truth is now." — Yuni in Book 2, light Chapter 10: You Are The One, Fire Emblem: Shadows
  13. "Joachim: I... Um...
Erma: You are lying, are you not?
    Joachim: No! I'm not lying.
Erma: I have interrogated many criminals on previous missions. They all lie and claim innocence, but lying well is not as easy as people think it is. Follow-up questions force them to make quick decisions. Tell the truth or come up with another lie? The harder they have to work at creating a story on the spot, the more they pause to think. If they just toss out the first lies that pop into their heads, their story starts contradicting itself. Unless they prepare a storyline of lies in advance, it will inevitably unravel.
    Joachim: But...
Erma: Because you are an honest and kind person, the shame you feel for telling these lies also betrays you. Tell us, are you the shadow disciple?
Joachim: I... Um..." — Joachim and Erma in Book 2, light Chapter 9: Telling Lies, Fire Emblem: Shadows
  14. "Estel: A test to see who's faster. Just like the silly foot races we used to have.
Joachim: Races... But I've never been as fast or strong as you." — Joachim and Estel in Book 2, light Chapter 13: Kindness Alone, Fire Emblem: Shadows
  15. "Joachim: You still long for the picture books Teacher used to read to us, don't you, Estel? A brave little rabbit defeating the monsters to make everyone happy.
Estel: Joachim, stop! You're only making it more embarrassing...
    Joachim: Why are you embarrassed?
Estel: Because it's childish to long for picture books. I'm an adult now.
Joachim: But I think your dream is beautiful.
Estel: Oh! Th-thank you. Now my cheeks are really burning! That's it for me. Someone else go." — Joachim and Estel in Book 2, shadow Chapter 9: Helpful Ally, Fire Emblem: Shadows
  16. "I'll kill them... Murder... I'll murder them. My anger and hatred will never cool... I want to kill every last one of those cretins... They took my family away from me. I hear whispers... The wolf of shadows promises to grant me the strength to tear them apart... That's music to my ears. I will devote myself to the shadow and paint everything in blood... Is this truly who I am? Maybe I am a wolf..." — Joachim's shadow side Building Bonds, Fire Emblem: Shadows
