Gotthold (Japanese: ゴットホルト Gotthold) is a character in Fire Emblem Shadows. He is a knight of Ast known by the nickname "Shield".
Biography
Gotthold was a knight of Ast and commander of the royal knights, tasked with protecting the king.[2] He also acted instructor to the knights Alberta and Carina when the two were apprentices.[3]
Following the invasion of Ast and the execution of the king and queen, Gotthold was now tasked with protecting the last royal, Prince Kurt. Gotthold escorted Kurt through the underground vault of Ast's castle, successfully escaping the assault of imperial forces and their shadow beasts.
However, Kurt's group encountered a traveler in the surrounding Azure Crow Forest. This traveler turned out to be Skoll, servant of Fenris. Gotthold witnessed how Skoll had approached Kurt in the night with an offer of a pact with Fenris, and how Skoll had killed Kurt for his refusal. As Kurt had been Gotthold's only reason to go on living after the king's death, Gotthold made a pact with Skoll, and became a disciple of shadow in exchange for Kurt's resurrection.
As Kurt's group traveled toward the allied kingdom of Holtz to finally escape pursuit, Gotthold was forced to leak information about Kurt's location, leading to two attacks on Kurt, first by the mercenary Zasha, who was convinced to switch sides and join Kurt, then by the bandit Bartolomeus.
The group reached Far Reaches Caverns on the border between Ast and Holtz. Only Gotthold could navigate the group through the labyrinthine caverns, yet the information he gave the enemy lead to an ambush the group barely escaped.
Inside the cavern, Gotthold was approached by Sai, a retainer to Naga. He offered Gotthold a pact with Naga, and Gotthold accepted, asking that he might have a single strike to protect Prince Kurt.
After escaping the ambush, Kurt figured out that Gotthold was the disciple of shadow among the group, and the retainer to Fenris Hati ordered Gotthold to strike down his liege. However, Gotthold's pact with Naga allowed him to strike Hati instead. His pact with Fenris was broken and Hati fled, though Gotthold was wrought with agony as punishment for breaking his pact. He entrusted Kurt to Carina and Alberta, promising to hold off any remaining pursuers. Though Kurt's group successfully reached Holtz, Gotthold perished inside the caves.
Fire Emblem Shadows
Role
Gotthold is a playable character unlocked by reaching level 4 in in the light side story of Book 1. He first appears in the second segment of the tutorial. His associated weapon is the Shield Lance.
Additionally, Gotthold frequently appears as an ally in Training Battles, as well as a light disciple in the second and sixth segments of the tutorial.
