Climate at a Glance

Ericeira sits on Portugal's western coast, where a Mediterranean climate meets the raw influence of the Atlantic Ocean. The result is mild, predictable weather - winters that rarely drop below 10°C, summers that hover between 20-28°C, and very few extremes in either direction.

The region enjoys over 300 sunny days per year, though the Atlantic breeze keeps things comfortable even in peak summer. Morning fog is common in June and July - locals call it "cacimba" - but it usually burns off by midday. Rain is concentrated between November and March, with summers almost entirely dry.

Spring (Mar–May)

The coast wakes up. Air temperatures climb from 15°C in March to 22°C by late May. Water is still cool at 14–16°C - a 4/3mm wetsuit is your friend. Swells are medium and consistent, lineups are uncrowded, and the wildflowers along the cliffs are at their peak. One of the best times for intermediate surfers.

Summer (Jun–Aug)
22–28°C Air / 17–18°C Water
Peak season. Hot days, warm water, and the most consistent sunshine. Waves are smaller and mellower - ideal for beginners and longboarders. The town fills up, especially in August when half of Lisbon migrates to the coast. Book accommodation early. Morning fog is common but always clears. Beach days are guaranteed.

Autumn (Sep–Nov)
18–25°C Air / 17–19°C Water
The best overall season. Summer warmth lingers - September still hits 25°C - while Atlantic swells start building. Water is at its warmest (17–19°C), crowds thin out after mid-September, and the light turns golden. This is when experienced surfers fly in. If you can only visit once, make it autumn.

Winter (Dec–Feb)
10–16°C Air / 13–15°C Water
Mild by European standards but cool enough to keep the crowds away. Daytime temperatures sit around 12–16°C with occasional rain. The Atlantic delivers its biggest swells - powerful, consistent, and best suited to experienced surfers. You'll need a 4/3mm or 5/4mm wetsuit with booties. The reward? Empty lineups and raw ocean energy.

It Depends on You

September–November

For Surfing

Autumn is the sweet spot. Water is still warm from summer (17–19°C), Atlantic swells start building with consistency, and the summer crowds have gone home. You get the best of both worlds - comfortable conditions with serious waves. A 3/2mm wetsuit handles most sessions through October.

July–August

For Beach

Peak summer delivers the heat - 25–28°C days, minimal rain, and warm water. The town is buzzing with energy, restaurants are full, and beach bars are open late. It's the busiest time of year but the atmosphere is worth it. Book well in advance.

April–June / Sep–Oct

For Remote Work

The shoulder seasons are gold for digital nomads. Pleasant temperatures, lower accommodation prices, and the coworking community is fully active. You'll surf uncrowded waves before work and join meetups in the evenings. The sweet spot between affordable and enjoyable.

Summer

Jun–Aug Essentials

Light clothing, sunscreen (the Atlantic sun is deceptive), a 2–3mm wetsuit or spring suit for surfing, sunglasses, and a light layer for evenings - the ocean breeze can cool things down after sunset.

Winter

Nov–Mar Essentials

Layers are key. A waterproof jacket for rainy days, warm casual wear, a 3–4mm wetsuit with booties for surfing, and something cozy for the cooler evenings. It's mild but not warm - think 12°C with wind chill on exposed cliffs.

Year-Round

Always Bring

Comfortable walking shoes - the cobblestone streets are charming but unforgiving. A reusable water bottle, reef-safe sunscreen, and a good book for the slower days. If you surf, bring your own wetsuit - rentals work but nothing beats your own fit.
