Her royal highness

Naked mole rats (Heterocephalus glaber, pictured on the cover) are rodents native to the Horn of Africa. They live in large underground colonies with just one breeding queen, who rules a hierarchical social system more akin to that of social ants and bees. But how this hierarchy is maintained has long been a mystery. In this week’s issue, Mohammed Khallaf, Gary Lewin and colleagues explore what it is that keeps queen mole rats on their thrones. The researchers identified a chemical signal produced by the queen that regulates reproductive hierarchy in the colony. Isopropyl myristate, a common ingredient in cosmetics, is deployed by queen mole rats to suppress reproduction in other females. Crucially, if isopropyl myristate is artificially added to a colony after the breeding queen is removed, then high ranked females remain calm and do not fight to take the throne, leaving the colony without a queen. As soon as the isopropyl myristate addition is stopped, a new queen emerges through violent competition. The team notes that use of a single odour to suppress reproduction is highly unusual among mammals and links this social system to that of social insects.
