Etymology

From Proto-Tai *ɗiəwᴬ (single; only one).[1] Cognate with Thai เดียว (diao), Isan เดียว (diaw⁴), Lao ດຽວ (diāu), Northern Thai ᨯ᩠ᨿᩅ (diaw⁴), Khün ᨯ᩠ᨿᩴ (deew⁴), ᦵᦡᧁ (ḋew), Tai Dam ꪒꪸꪫ (điêu), Tai Dón ꪒꪸꪫ, Shan လဵဝ် (lǎeo), Tai Nüa ᥘᥥᥝ (lew), Ahom 𑜃𑜢𑜈𑜫 (niw).

Usage notes

  • Used with song rather than ngeih.
  • To indicate an amount of one, ndeu is placed after the classifier–noun construction.
  • To indicate one after the tens place in numbers like 11 and 21, ndeu cannot be used. In these cases, it is used instead.
