Having spent days making PkgBase easy on

The (highly opinionated) Sum Total of computer history:

0. BSD Unix
1. Macintosh
2. Packaged Base in Red Hat 5.2
3. Squiggly underline spell check
4. FreeBSD Jail to manage the fustercluck that are RPMs on Red Hat
5. Two-finger scrolling
6. Hardware-assisted virtualization
7. ZFS v28
8. NVMe

TCP/IP is taken for granted, as it is not vendor/platform-specific.

Flat screen displays are a TV crossover technology, as are WiFi, GPS, and fancy batteries.

If that doesn’t set people off, I don’t know what will.

Call For Testing: Major updates

occambsd.sh - More-consistent syntax
propagate.sh - Propagate PkgBase installs
imagine.sh - Image boot images from the others and upstream
sideload.sh - Push (much of) a configuration to a new installation
rc.local.sh - Semi-idempotently configure basic aspects of a system

They’re never done, never perfect, but they do exactly what I have envisioned in various ways and given talks about for 20+ years.

Emerging observations on how lockdown was great for :

Work from home was blessed as a valid thing

Sci-fi-like casual video conferencing without hesitation around the world is now the norm for some of us, only limited by time zones and languages.

Group video chat is equally familiar and commonplace, with excellent self-policing of audio quality and behavior.

Events are focusing on quality over quantity, complimenting the above.

Basically, the “open source seems to be where drunk guys pinch your butt while mansplaining you” factors were globally nipped in the bud.

Good work everyone!

These are delightful times!

❤️❤️❤️

Repost: It took time, but development is back to a robust pace on both and with a good balance of new features and subtle refinement.

I have begun posting recordings of the weekly Jails/Zones, , and bhyve Production Users calls:

🇪🇪 Estonia has found a way to make Russia pay for the reconstruction of Ukraine

Estonian Prime Minister has proposed that the EU levy duties on Russian goods, including steel and fertilizers, and direct the proceeds to the reconstruction of Ukraine.

One of the most annoying things about NFSv4 is how it's no longer possible to tell which clients have which filesystems mounted.

That's a confusing message

> localhost:ztank: 16E sent, 69 streams received in 309.01 seconds

Usually that "16E" is "200G" or "1T". How much data did it receive in five minutes?

Piss off a tech bro, speedrun any%:

Coding is not the hard part of making software. People are the hard part of making software.

Therefore, computer science is a humanities study.

Hey fellow #OpenBSD crowd :flan_coffee:

I am worried about @tedu - can't get a hold of him, last CVS commits were somewhere 2025, no Fedi activity, websites down, etc.

Just wanted to make sure he is okay, regardless of the reason for being inactive.

Update: While the search is still ongoing, somebody I trust just confirmed receiving an e-mail from tedu on Feb 26, 2026.

I sense that /#ARM64 will become very interesting in the 25 hours, thanks to John Baldwin doing John Baldwin-y things.

#Ukraine urges global use of 'Chornobyl' over 'Chernobyl' to respect its language, sovereignty, and decolonize place names, as with 'Kyiv' over 'Kiev'.

Spelling Matters.

Has anyone actually migrated a campus/corporate network from ISC dhcpd to Kea? Near as I can see the data model is godawful, lots of functionality still isn't supported, and there doesn't seem to be much if any real benefit if you're not a multi-million-customer residential ISP. Is there a non-ISC maintained alternative to dhcpd?

Anyone have experience running nested VMs on Arm64? When I start an L2 guest inside an L1 hypervisor with virsh, one or two host cores (not cores being used by the L1 hypervisor) get pegged at 100% and I get warnings from the kernel about a core getting stuck - not sure how to debug it and characterize the issue.
