On 24-25 August 1814, during the War of 1812, the British invaded Maryland and burned Washington D.C. Commodore Thomas Tingey, superintendent of the Washington Navy Yard, burned the Navy Yard to prevent British access during the invasion.
On 23-25 August 1942, Task Force 61 engaged the Japanese First Carrier Division. Neither side was able to secure a clear victory, although U.S. forces gained tactical and strategic advantage.
