Suggested changes[edit]

I've got few changes I want to suggest, relating to the staff:

  • Organize people alphabetically by last name, rather than first name.
  • Distinguish HAL Laboratory staff and people from other companies/freelancer
  • Distinguish current and former staff through italic text.

This is how it would look. Thoughts? Superbound (talk) 16:16, 26 February 2025 (UTC)

Definitely support changing alphabetical order to last names, and I like the idea of distinguishing HAL from others. Not sure about italics though, they kinda stick out, but I don't really have any better ideas for that... ShadowKirby (t/c) a.k.a. your new overlord ShadowMagolor 16:50, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
I'm not sure if we really need to distinguish current and former staff, the pages themselves have that information and I feel like a navbox doesn't really need that. Support the sort by last name and separate by employee/freelancer. ---PinkYoshiFan 16:56, 26 February 2025 (UTC)
I am not the biggest fan of these changes, in particular the first one, it's hard to tell at first glance it's ordered by last name and it looks clunky to me. So I prefer to keep the current ordering (also, why change to last name ordering in the first place anyway?). For the second, personally I would straight up just remove the non HAL staff from this navbox, after all they aren't HAL staff so weird to have them in a HAL navbox. The only downsize is where to put them then, so we may need a "staff" navbox maybe? So I guess we can keep them here, just odd still for me. For the last, I do like distinguishing them but I am unsure if italics is the way to do it, maybe a different section still. Unsure. - Gigi (talkedits) 13:38, 3 March 2025 (UTC)
First concern: I'll be honest, I don't see how ordering by last name is clunky in any way. I mean, that is the common name to list people (I cannot remember any time I have seen names sorted by first name, sans this navbox) and refer to them on encyclopedias like WiKirby (e.g. "Sakurai" or sometimes "Masahiro Sakurai", but never just "Masahiro"). I imagine most people will tell at first glance, since when you see the category with the word "staff", and the links consisting of two words, you automatically assume these are names: first name and last name, in that order. And because listing people alphabetically by last name is the most common, it's easy to see pattern. To me, the currently used first name ordering is actually the more clunky one, as no matter how many times I have looked at this navbox, I would instinctively search by last name, only to become confused when the last names weren't alphabetical (this is the the reason why I'm proposing the change). Also, because last names are more prominent, I (and some people probably too) end up knowing the last name but not first, cue me reading all the names in the navbox from the start to find Kamiyama.
Second concern: Even though the template is called "Navbox-HAL", its title is "HAL Laboratory, Nintendo, and related subjects". As of staff navbox, I wouldn't write it off entirely, but if it would happen, we would have to consider what to with this navbox. If you remove the staff section, you end up with just 6 pages, and imo that's too little to justify still existing.
Third concern: I thought having three staff-dedicated categories would be overkill, but if others don't think so, then I don't mind. Otherwise, I got no other better ideas. Superbound (talk) 19:43, 18 March 2025 (UTC)
