A Protective Bag (originally just called a bag)[1] is an object present in Kirby's Dream Land 2, often found in rooms containing mid-bosses. Once all foes guarding the bag have been defeated, the bag will drop if it was hanging from a chain and open up, revealing one of Kirby's friends. Usually, this will be either Rick, Kine, or Coo, but if Kirby is already with the friend that is being rescued, Gooey or the Girl blob (Chao in the Japanese version) could also appear from a bag. If Kirby touches the bag before the foes are defeated or if the bag lands on him, it will knock him back as if he was hurt, but deal no damage.

In Kirby Star Allies, Rick & Kine & Coo and Gooey use Protective Bags when guarding, referencing Kirby's Dream Land 2. Gooey can also use this technique in Kirby Fighters 2. Additionally, one of the Stone ability's transformations in Kirby Star Allies and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe is a statue of Rick, Kine, and Coo emerging from a Protective Bag.

Kirby novel series[edit]

In the Kirby novel series, a Protective Bag appears in Kirby: Save the Rainbow Islands! as a knitted pouch that Pick wears around her neck. Pick gives Rick the pouch she wore as a good luck charm. To restrain Pirika, Meta Knight and King Dedede after their defeat, the group stuffs them in the pouch, which can stretch into a bigger size. When Meta Knight and King Dedede regain their consciousness, they burst out of the pouch, releasing Pirika too. At the end of the story, Rick thanks Pick for giving him the pouch.
