Common Community Solar Questions
Learn how community solar works, who qualifies, and how we help put money back into your pocket.
What is community solar?
Community solar allows you to subscribe to a share of a local solar farm. That solar energy is sent to the power grid, and in return, you receive credits on your electric bill. This lets you save money without installing panels on your home.
Do I need to install anything on my property?
Nope! Community solar doesn’t require any equipment or changes to your home. You’re simply subscribing to a share of a solar project in your area.
Is this the same as rooftop solar?
Not at all. Rooftop solar involves installing panels on your home, while community solar is off-site. You join a solar farm and get credit on your bill, with no equipment or cost.
Who can sign up for community solar?
Most residents who have a utility account in an eligible state can sign up. Homeowners, renters, and businesses are all welcome — no solar panels or home ownership required.

We’re a mission-driven company that helps everyday people access the benefits of clean energy at no cost. We help residents with the enrollment process, and alleviate any doubts of the program. Our team partners with state-backed solar farms, helping local farmers and improving the utility grid!
Are you affiliated with utility companies?
We’re not owned by a utility, but we work directly with utility-approved solar programs in each state to help you save safely and legally.
How do I get started?
Just click “Get Started” anywhere on our site, fill out the short form, and one of our team members will reach out to walk you through it! Easy peasy!
How long does it take to start saving?
Once you sign up and your utility processes the enrollment, it usually takes 1-2 billing cycles for the savings to appear on your account.
How much will I save?
You will be saving 10-15% off your electric bill every month! The amount can vary from field to field.
Which states qualify for this program?
Shared Solar Advisors currently assists people in Maine, Maryland, Delaware, Illinois, Minnesota and Colorado.
How do I qualify?
In order to qualify to participate in community solar farms, you must have paid at least four utility bills at your current address, and each bill must have been over $50 per month.
Will I still have enough energy in the winter?
Yes! If you do not have enough credits to cover all the energy you use, you will simply be billed by your utility company at the regular rate for that energy.
What if I decide I want to stop saving money and leave the solar field?
There is no fee to opt-out of these programs.
If you do decide to opt out, the terms and conditions will depend on the specific project. Please review your agreement for any specific requirements. Providing advance notice is all that’s needed to facilitate a smooth transition and allow us to find a replacement.
