Pete is a pelican mailman in the Animal Crossing series. In every mainline game before Animal Crossing: New Horizons, he delivers mail to the residents of the town twice a day at 9 AM and 5 PM. During his brief visits, he can be stopped by the player to speak about his job or his co-workers, Pelly and Phyllis. In Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, he runs Pete's Parcel Service, allowing players to send request items to villagers. Pete also makes a brief appearance in 🎬 Gekijōban Doubutsu no Mori.

Characteristics

Appearance

Image
Artwork of Pete from Animal Crossing

Pete is a white pelican with a yellow beak and feet. In all games, he wears a green jacket with a red tie, a blue mail bag, and a green hat with a white-and-yellow stripe and a red badge on the front. In Doubutsu no Mori and Doubutsu no Mori+, the red badge on his cap contains the Japanese postal mark, 〒, which was removed for the international release of Animal Crossing and all subsequent games worldwide. When at The Roost in New Horizons, Pete does not wear his hat.

Voice

In the first-generation games, Pete has the same low-pitched voice as a cranky villager. Beginning in Wild World, this is changed to a higher pitched voice.

Personality

Pete often speaks about the importance and difficulty of his job, as well as about his co-worker and unrequited love, Phyllis. Due to his strict schedule, he does not speak much to the player.

Relationships

Pelly and Phyllis

Image
Pete telling the player about Phyllis in City Folk

Pete works for the post office or town hall alongside Pelly and Phyllis, the building's daytime and nighttime clerks, respectively. Despite rumors from the town's villagers that Pete and Pelly are dating, it is her sister Phyllis whom he has romantic feelings for, although it is implied that the feelings are not mutual. Pete often mentions liking Phyllis's maturity and the smell of her perfume, and he gets excited any time she acknowledges or interacts with him. Meanwhile, Pelly has an unrequited crush on Pete.

Appearances

In the first-generation games

Image
Pete speaking to the player in Animal Crossing
"Ah, yes. I've heard there are rumors about me and Pelly. And I really don't appreciate any of it. Pelly is nice, and she makes me very nice lunches... But...how do I put this...she's too much of a child. I'm interested in a more mature relationship."
— Pete talking about his relationship with Pelly, Animal Crossing

In every first-generation Animal Crossing game, Pete lands in the player house acre every day at 9 AM and 5 PM and walks to each house to deliver the mail before flying off. If there is no mail to be delivered, he will take off a few seconds after landing. While he is on the ground, he can be spoken to. Pete has unique dialogue for April Fools' Day in which he tells the player that he is going on his first date with Phyllis that night, being disappointed that it isn't true.

If the player fills all five of the post office's letter slots with mail, Pete can be seen flying away to deliver them as they exit the post office.

In Doubutsu no Mori e+, if the player scans the e-Reader card K10 Steep Hill and speaks to Pete, he gives them a recording of the live version of "Steep Hill".

In Wild World

Image

"I'm in the middle of my deliveries, and I'm in a hurry! If I'm even a little late, a certain someone gets upset. But I won't tell you who!"
— Pete, Animal Crossing: Wild World

In Animal Crossing: Wild World, Pete can be seen flying above town on the top screen at 9 AM or 5 PM twice a week on days where no other visitors are scheduled to appear. If the player shoots him with a slingshot, he falls to the ground. Once spoken to, he gets up and speaks to the player, unaware that it was them who shot him down. Afterward, Pete walks around town.

The player must speak to Pete at least once to unlock Pelly and Phyllis's dramas.

In City Folk

Image

"What? I'm a mail carrier! Don't ask me if I carry babies. We ask the storks to do that."
— Pete, Animal Crossing: City Folk

In Animal Crossing: City Folk, Pete can appear wandering around town from 9:00 to 9:30 AM or 5:00 to 5:30 PM from Monday to Friday if there are no other visitors scheduled. He would also appear outside the player's house for WiiConnect24 item distributions to hand-deliver a letter with an item to the player.

In New Leaf

Image
Pete speaking to the player in New Leaf

In Animal Crossing: New Leaf, Pete can appear wandering around town from 9:00 to 9:30 AM or 5:00 to 5:30 PM from Monday to Saturday if there are no other visitors scheduled. Additionally, he appears outside the player's house if their mailbox is full to remind them to empty it. Pete also has a chance to appear at The Roost from 6:00 to 6:55 AM, and as a customer while the player works part-time; his preferences are Blend beans, the regular amount of milk, and two spoonfuls of sugar.

Like in City Folk, Pete would appear outside the player's house for certain SpotPass item distributions to hand-deliver a letter with an item to the player, although in New Leaf most distributed items were handed directly to the player at the post office by Pelly or Phyllis.

After the player saves 50,000,000 Bells in the ABD, the post office sends them a letter containing the mailman's hat, a replica of the hat worn by Pete. Additionally, in the Welcome amiibo update, summoning Pete via Wisp by scanning the former's amiibo card results in Wisp giving the player Pete's pic.

In New Horizons

Image
Pete at The Roost in New Horizons

Pete was added to Animal Crossing: New Horizons in the 2.0 Free Update. Although he has no role, he can be invited to The Roost or Photopia if his amiibo card is scanned. If Phyllis is invited to The Roost, she brings Pelly with her, and Pete sits at the counter trying not to be seen by them. Additionally, since version 1.0.0, inviting or attempting to invite him to Photopia unlocks Pete's poster.

As with all special characters in New Horizons, Pete can be invited to design a vacation home for in the Happy Home Paradise DLC if his amiibo card is scanned. Completing his vacation home unlocks Pete's photo and, if not already unlocked through Photopia, Pete's poster.

In Happy Home Designer

As with all special characters in Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer, Pete can be invited to design a house for if his amiibo card is scanned at the amiibo phone in Nook's Homes.

In amiibo Festival

As with all villagers and special characters in Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival, Pete can be played as in any minigame if his amiibo card is scanned.

In Pocket Camp

"I can deliver whatever you need delivered! Just select a request."
— Pete, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp

Pete appears in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp as the host of Pete's Parcel Service, a delivery service that allows players to deliver requests to various villagers without speaking to them directly. However, Pete cannot deliver items to villagers that the player has not spoken to at least once.

Description NTSC-U: Delivering the mail keeps Pete very busy. He takes great pride in his work, and he sometimes looks like he's in need of sleep. That isn't because he's working too hard—thinking about his crush on Phyllis keeps him up all night! He doesn't let that stop him from getting to work early, though.

PAL: You might bump into Pete every now and then while he's out delivering post. He takes pride in his work and gets up bright and early every day. Sadly, he's got a terrible illness that keeps him up at night. Yep...he's incurably lovesick. Poor Pete just can't stop thinking about Phyllis from the post office!
