English: The litra (λίτρα) or litron is both a unit of weight and a coin of that weight as used in the Greek colonies of Sicily and Magna Graecia. It was used in the Greek colonies of Sicily before they came under Roman rule. The value was equivalent to one-fifth of a drachma. During the Archaic and Classical periods, the litra was made of silver and weighed 0.85 g (close to that of the obol, which had a 1/6 value in relation to the drachma). Like the Roman as, the litra was subdivided into 12 onkia. Fractions of the litra are found as the hexas, 1/6 of a litra (2 onkia); the tetras, 1/4 (3 onkia); the trias, 1/3 (4 onkia); the hemilitro, 1/2 litra (4 onkia); and the pentonkio, 5 onkia. The terms litra and onkia are of Italic origin and correspond to the libra and the uncia.
