Youth Skills Clinics

Learn to Play Ultimate!

DiscNY runs a variety of youth clinics throughout the year to help the community learn to play! We have clinic series targeted at all levels of play from middle school novice players through the highest level of our high school players. We also try to offer clinic series specifically for Girls & Nonbinary division players. We view all of our clinics as some of our most important programming, as they help to shape the future of NYC Ultimate.

Middle School Clinics

Our Middle School and Learn to Play Clinics are the baseline of our youth clinics program. They're aimed at getting new players the basic skills they need to play the sport of ultimate and getting players used to playing team sports. We always aim to run these clinics year-round, but their peak season is the fall. Middle School Clinics are for ages 10 and up. These are typically taught by MS or HS coaches, but may include other volunteer coaches from any level of the sport.

All Middle School Clinics include group activities, 1-on-1 instruction with coaches, personalized feedback and tips, ultimate-focused and team play-focused drills, and scrimmages. Each individual clinic will also have its own focus like throwing mechanics, cutting mechanics, or defensive fundamentals. Clinics run between an hour and 90 minutes, depending on the specific date.

High School Clinics

Our High School Clinics are aimed at getting new high school players up to scratch. Some of them will be Learn to Play style clinics designed to teach the basic fundamentals of ultimate. Others will expand on the skillsets from Middle School and High School Learn to Play Clinics and take high school players to the next level of their game. These are typically taught by High School Coaches, TRY U Coaches, and/or college and club players.

All High School Clinics include group activities, 1-on-1 instruction with coaches, personalized feedback and tips, ultimate and team building drills, and scrimmages. Clinic focuses might include expanded fundamentals, learning to play specific systems, position-focused tips and tricks, and more depending on coaching staff. Clinics run between 90 minutes and two hours depending on the specific date.

Third Rail (TRY U) Clinics

Our TRY U Clinics are designed as master classes for high school players. They're aimed at improving your existing game to prep you for higher-level play like Youth Club, College, and beyond. They also include valuable skills to take back to your high school team. These are typically taught by TRY U coaches, college players, and/or club and pro players.

All TRY U Clinics include group activities, 1-on-1 instruction with coaches, personalized feedback and tips, ultimate and team building drills, and high level scrimmages. Clinic focuses might include master classes on fundamentals, expansion on systems and types of play styles, position-focused intensives, how to approach tryouts, and more depending on coaching staff. TRY U Clinics typically run for 2 hours.

Coaches

All DiscNY Coaches are background check cleared, SafeSport and concussion safety certified, and trained to coach youth by USA Ultimate and DiscNY. We focus on social-emotional learning, the joy of play, and building the future of NYC Ultimate.

Clinics tend to have a variety of coaches based on volunteer availability. DiscNY does our best to maintain at least a few consistent coaches for the duration of a clinic cycle, with guest coaches to teach specific lessons. This ensures that kids both have a consistent set of folks teaching them skills, and that they have a variety of different perspectives on ultimate. The goal is to give them feedback in different ways.
