A Live CD is a distribution stored on a bootable CD-ROM that lets you run an operating system and software without installing anything to your hard drive. Instead of a CD you may also run such a system from a USB drive or other media.
Some Live CDs come with an installation utility that can install the operating system to a hard drive (or USB keydrive). Most Live CDs can allow you to access the information on the hard disk so you can access files in your system and rescue broken systems.
