Bio
Software developer with almost 30 years of experience looking to help your team ship better software faster from my snowy Fortress In Exile in Canada using PHP, Python, Go, and TypeScript.
I used to write books and go to PHP conferences to shout at people to write tests for their PHP code. Still a legend in the eyes of some.
Professional computer toucher since 1997.

This almost made me smile
“Much like drinking at work, people are really bad at moderation, often while insisting it's the only way they can be productive.”
Those PHP tests you write using LLM’s are done using stolen content from my books. Tell me again how “beneficial” these tools are.

The online world does not to have to bend to make your defaults everyone else’s defaults
Complaining about everything is not a hobby, it just alerts everyone else to ignore you
The common thread of tech companies in the 2020’s is how much they lie about everything all the time and suffer no consequences for it.
It is starting to look like there will be no trade deal for Canada with the US any time soon and punitive tarrifs of 50% on $28 billion of yearly trade will be going into effect on Wednesday.
Every anonymous source is reporting the same thing: the US is insisting Canada force provinces to put US booze back on store shelves, allow the US to flood Canada with cheap dairy products, and remove the tarrifs Canada put into place after the US did it first once Trump was in office again.
The US is offering nothing in return.

It’s my 28th wedding anniversary today. Please say a silent prayer for my long-suffering wife.
I am going to work on my @phparch column next week with the topic “Building A Grumpy Software Development Approach in PHP” and want to know if there is anything you like me to cover or questions you have.

You can see how unserious rhe Canadian government is about our sovereignty when they publicly talk about it but let deals like this happen.
There is no reason other than the interests of a small group of already incredibly wealthy and profitable corporations to allow a huge part of our payment infrastructure to belong to a non-Canadian company.
How long until your purchase history is used against you due to religious morals instead of being none of their goddamned business?

As I have been working my way through Go By Example, I feel like I have hit a plateau that can only be fixed by seeing the production code I will be dealing with 🤷♂️
Every time I stumble across “every day carry” stuff or an “interesting bag” I get a momentary pang that I have worked from home so long.
I can only imagine how enraged I would get these days at commuting, especially with how much driving habits have gotten worse in the COVID era.
“The system won’t let you succeed” is doomer talk. Be better. I sense I am going to be muting and blocking more and more people going forward.
Don’t let others decide what success for you looks like.
