NASA’s favorite (habitable) planet. 🌎💚 Studying Earth from ground to orbit.
- NASA’s PREFIRE satellites have now collected two full years of data showing how surface temperatures change at Earth’s poles. Tracking these changes helps scientists better understand how energy moves into and out of the Earth system.
- A solar eclipse will be visible in much of the Northern Hemisphere today! A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes in front of the Sun. Those in the path of totality will see something like the left photo; others may see a partial solar eclipse like the right photo.
- Will it be too cloudy to see the eclipse where you are? ☁️ This visualization uses the @NASA GEOS-CAM model to simulate where clouds, dust, and other aerosols will be during the Aug. 12 solar eclipse. Totality will begin around 8:30pm in Spain & 5:45pm in Iceland (local times).
- Lumpy potato or just math? 🥔 The geoid is a mathematical model of Earth’s gravitational field, not what Earth actually looks like. Gravity is stronger where there’s more mass, so when those differences are scaled up by a factor of 10,000, the geoid gets lumpy.
