It’s kind of funny how, years ago, we all raced to become “data-driven” organizations. We cast our data nets wide and grabbed every data point we could. So much, in fact, that we began drowning in it. Good, clear, smart data visualization is the boat that keeps you afloat.

Sounds like a deal to me. You could always ship yourself to one of my in-person workshops to get the same info – they’re a blast – but this is less than the price of a single workshop, with much more content packed in, you have unlimited access, AND you don’t have to breathe airplane air.

AI can, indeed, make graphs. But they’re bad. See the results of my AI data viz experiment here. If you’re ok looking like you’re stuck in Office 98, rock on with your free robot. You can surely sink hours of your life trying to prompt your way to good charts. But there’s a world to save out there. Learn my methods to whip out high-quality charts in mere minutes (without the ethical violations of intellectual property theft and the environmental devastation AI brings to our poorest communities).
My blog is awesome and you’ll pick up great tips there but it doesn’t have the depth or sustained learning that you’ll find in the Academy. The Academy builds up toward more challenging visualizations. You also get access to pitch me your questions in our monthly Office Hours call, plus peer feedback on your works-in-progress. There’s other fun stuff too like insider activities and events. And templates if you’re short on time. All of these are things I will never do at my blog and it’s why thousands of students thrive so much in the Academy.
Kind of. Most online courses are offered in modules, where you have to complete lessons in a sequence and wait to get to something you really need. We don’t do that here. If you’re ready to jump head first into interactive dashboards in R, we won’t hold you back. You get access to everything we’ve created as soon as you join. That said, we suggest tutorials to complete first, to lay your foundation. And we’ll send you suggested study paths that get you going if you don’t know where to begin.
On average, it usually takes students 30-60 minutes to learn a graph. You can complete as many tutorials as you’d like (and then collect your high fives throughout the office). You should also practice with your own data to chisel the lessons into your brain. Monthly Office Hours webinars last up to an hour. Participation in our community forums is as much or little as you want. You can revisit the tutorials anytime you’d like because your access is for lifetime.
I’m an interdisciplinary researcher by training – which means I know data from every industry. I have a PhD (most data visualizers do not), with a dissertation about how researchers use graphic design research to make reporting more engaging (Summary: They don’t). I’ve steeped myself in the research to write three books on this topic and I’ve traveled the world teaching people how to visualize data more effectively. I had so many questions about how to communicate evaluation and research findings to non-technical audiences and wanted to know the most evidence-informed ways to do so.
I was trained in an R1 institution that never ever talked about data viz but we were expected to deliver research findings to youth-focused organizations. I needed a better way.
