CRC Apply for Account

Applying for an Account with the CRC

If you would like to request an account, please select one of the following options:

Research Staff and Students

You should apply for a regular user account if all of the following are true:

  • You are a research staff member or student working for a Rice research faculty member
  • Your sponsoring faculty member has applied for a sponsor account
  • You have a valid Rice NetID; i.e. you can log in successfully at WhooRU

Research Faculty of Rice University

You should apply for a research sponsor account if all of the following are true:

  • You are a Rice research faculty member
  • You would like a cluster account for yourself  AND/OR you would like to sponsor members of your research group
  • You have a valid Rice NetID; i.e. you can log in successfully at WhooRU
  • You have read and agree to the Research Account Management Fee Schedule

If you already have a Sponsor account and are trying to find the login to approve requests or revoke accounts, it is https://www.crc.rice.edu/agreement/.

Like all CRC services, your computer must be connected to the Rice network in order to access our account management portal. Please see CRC Access to Shared Computing Resources for details.

We understand there may be some situations where this is not possible, and in those cases we ask you to submit a ticket so we can help you.

Guest/Academic Visitor Accounts

If you are an external collaborator or visitor who is not directly affiliated with Rice University, you will need to become an "Academic Visitor" and obtain a Rice NetID in order to access CRC resources.  To achieve this status, your Research sponsor will need to register you via the Visitor Management System.  Once the Visitor process is completed and your NetID is created, simply apply for a regular user account as described above.

Notes for sponsors using the Visitor Management System:

  • The Visitor system may create separate accounts for the same person and thus distinct NetIDs. If this happens you must notify visitorhelp@rice.edu so they can correct their records.

  • For clarity, to get to the "Create new visitor" button, you must first click the "Search All Visitors" button.

Class Accounts

Faculty members teaching a course requiring class use of one or more of the shared clusters should submit a request through the help desk detailing the following:

  • Course short name (e.g. COMP101)
  • If the class is cross-listed
  • List of systems required for the class
  • Details of any node/partition reservations needed for the class
  • Any software not already present on the system that will be required for the class
  • Desired starting date for account access
  • Desired date for access termination (please don't forget to include time to complete final exams/projects if this applies)

Important:

  • Students do not need to apply directly for their own class accounts.  Individual student accounts will be created automatically when the instructor applies for the class account as above.
  • Students will receive emails from the account creation system once the accounts are ready.
  • Students when submitting jobs, students should prefix the name of the job with the class short name (e.g. COMP101)
  • Students should verify their job submission scripts use their correct email address in order to receive job status notifications.

Help us help you by planning ahead.

Sponsors, please allow the CRC time to discuss with you and understand your class needs well before the required access begins.  That is, please don't submit a class account request at the last minute -- or if you do, please don't expect immediate results.
