Welcome to the Gardens of Kadesh

Gardens of Kadesh (GoK) is a fan project to maintain and improve the 1999 classics RTS game Homeworld.

History

  • 1997-06-01: Relic Entertainment is founded in Vancouver, Canada, and begins work on a real-time strategy game, set and played in a 3D space environment.

  • 1999-09-28: Homeworld (first of its name) is released to worldwide acclaim, winning multiple awards for its novel gameplay and strong single-player story.

  • 2003: The source code for Homeworld 1 is made available with the release of Homeworld 2. A small but dedicated community of fans starts an effort to port it to SDL. The original goal was a port to MacOS, but later also enabled native versions for Linux, and more recently, web browsers. The project is named "Homeworld SDL".

  • 2012: Homeworld SDL's source code is saved to GitHub.

  • 2016: Efforts on Homeworld SDL have died off, the website goes dark.

  • 2019: The project is picked up from the 2012 GitHub export (last publicly available copy of the code) by a couple of volunteers. They decide to rename the project "Gardens of Kadesh" after Mission 07 of the single-player campaign.
