Comment: This is potentially notable. Most sources in here are either from around the time of the incident or a few passing mentions later on which may or may not be enough to prove enduring notability. Being "the worst mass murder suicide in Western Australia’s history until the Osmington shooting" suggests to me that there should be more to this story in terms of aftermath which will help you establish notability. The Wyzykowski family murders was a familicide that occurred on 3 July 1999, in Karragullen, Western Australia, Australia, when 25-year-old Barbara-Anne Wyzykowski took her five children out to desolate bushlands, before gassing herself and her children with her car's exhaust. It was the worst mass murder suicide in Western Australia’s history until the Osmington shooting almost 20 years later,[1] and is one of the worst losses of children in Australia’s history.[2][3]The mass murder prompted fear, questions, and outrage into the mental health and state of Australian parents.[4]
The murders
[edit]On 3 July 1999, Barbara-Anne Wyzykowski, a kitchen hand from Carlisle,[5] took her five young children, Mark, 8; Twins Sarah and Luke, 5; Jessie, 4; and Jayde, 1; out to bush of Karragullen in her Toyota Tarago took a plastic tube and hooked it up to the car exhaust before gassing herself and her children.[6][7][8] The bodies and the vehicle weren’t found until a trail bike rider found them and notified the authorities. They couldn’t identify the 6, until they discovered a birthday card in Mark’s hand that they then identified the bodies.[8][9]
Possible copycat
[edit]Three weeks after Barbara murdered her children, Mark Heath, an unemployed laborer, overcome by the actions of a sexual predator towards his family, drove his four children into desolate bush lands before gassing himself and all four of his children.[10][11] This incident prompted more fear leading to more questions on the mental health of Australian society. Psychologists downplayed the incident at first,[12] but later did confirm that her method of murder did inspire him for how to commit the act, but that he had a different motive than Wyzykowski.
Investigation and aftermath
[edit]It was criticized by many for the press to have many shock value covers of the tragedy to sell more copies, while neglecting the possible motive of Wyzykowski: An overwhelmed and sleep deprived young mother, who was constantly pregnant at the age of 17, and worked hard to feed her five young children.[13] The case has been used in studies of domestic violence and how to do more measures of protecting children.[14]
