Previously Director @ Apple
Adam Coates co-developed Deep Speech 2, an end-to-end speech recognition system that handles English and Mandarin. Previously a Director at Apple, he served as the director of the Baidu Silicon Valley AI Lab and an Operating Partner at Khosla Ventures. His research involves ML, robotics, and HPC, including the development of Deep Voice for real-time text-to-speech and the training of deep networks on COTS HPC systems. He also authored Reading Digits in Natural Images, which utilizes unsupervised feature learning for character recognition in scene data. Earlier work includes applying RL and apprenticeship learning to achieve autonomous aerobatic helicopter flight. Coates completed his PhD at Stanford University in 2012, where he focused on computer vision and perception for autonomous vehicles and robots.
