Fixed loading of sites ending with *.user.js name. (BUG: 467459)

Enabled switching tabs with mouse wheel when the scrollbar is visible. (BUG: 394066)

Falkon now display more proper security icon in the url bar based on the state if the SSL certificate exceptions. (BUG: 420902)

Removed FTP support

The FTP support in Chomium and QtWebEngine which is based on it was removed a while ago. So with this update Falkon will not advertise to the system that it support FTP protocol and it will instead try to open other program to handle it. (BUG: 494222)

This release focuses on SiteSettings feature, so I will try to introduce it here.

Site Settings

This feature tries to enable per site configuration / settings of multiple options per website host / domain. It consist of having global / default options and site / local settings.

The default QtWebEngine / site options can be changed in the Browsing tab or in place where they where configured until now.

In the preferences it is only possible to change existing modified permissions for given sites. At the moment it is not possible to manually add sites to the list, this can only be done from within “Site Info” dialog.

When the zoom level on the page is different than the default, show current zoom level in the address bar.

It is possible to widen the address bar suggestion popup to the window width. This option is disabled by default, but it can be useful on smaller screens.

Certificate exceptions can now be stored indefinitely. There is also a GUI to see and manage the current exceptions which is located at [Preferences > Other > Certificate Exception Manager]

New Falkon version 23.04.0 is being released as part of KDE Gear.

Notable changes

There is a handful of changes in this release.

KWallet

The format under which the passwords are stored has changed from Binary to Map. The passwords can now be viewed from within KWalletManager and even edited. While editing and adding new ones I would be careful with the data field and updated that as well. (This is some Falkon password internal mechanic) The Folder under which the passwords are stored changed from Falkon to FalkonPasswords. This was done to not overwrite the old passwords and potentialy ruin them during the migration to new format.

Support for dark color scheme

Note: This is NOT browser dark mode support.

Falkon internal pages now respect the dark color scheme, if it is forced through chromium flags in environment variable.

A small demonstration can be seen below. The color scheme might not be the best since it was designed on display with weird color settings.

First bugfix release is now out.

Binary builds

Starting with this release, there are official builds available for Linux and Windows platforms.

In addition to nightly Linux Flatpak builds, there is now also AppImage for stable releases.

For Windows, there are 32 and 64-bit installers, which now includes both standard and portable versions.

State of macOS port is currently in bad shape, so there won’t be any macOS builds until the situation changes.

Falkon 3.0.0 released

Falkon is a new KDE web browser, previously known as QupZilla. Following this release, there will only be one last final QupZilla release.

If you were previously using QupZilla, you can manually migrate your profiles to Falkon by moving the config directory (usually in ~/.config/qupzilla/). There is no automatic migration.

Apart from some under the hood changes, like changing build system from qmake to CMake or using XDG paths, there aren’t many differencies from QupZilla. There is a new extension - Vertical Tabs, but it will also be available later this week in last QupZilla release.

It is possible to write Falkon extensions in Python, but since the bindings are generated using PySide2 which is not yet released and thus not packaged by distributions, it won’t be currently available for users.

Windows and macOS support is not yet finished, it will be available later.
