I don't know this board, is D5 connected to GPIO14? Otherwise you're configuring the wrong pin for the button.

Have you set your input pin to use the internal pullup, e.g. pinMode(buttonPin, INPUT_PULLUP) instead of pinMode(buttonPin, INPUT). If you use the pin in input mode you would need a pull up resistor in your circuit
You don't need a breadboard, and the wire color doesn't matter, your button seems fine. It could be an issue that you're wrapping the wire around the pin, but it's probably fine. It would be better to use alligator clips with jumper wires or solder.
