Of course it’s fine to have an app that can turn on my lights! It just can’t be the ONLY way and it can’t REQUIRE A CLOUD SERVICE TO FUNCTION.

I’ve had some smart lights last me over 10 years, they dim in any fixture, they change color when my daughter and her little friends want a dance party, and they can automatically turn on when I arrive home at night and need to unlock the back door. Local control without a cloud. Not a fucking thing wrong with that.

The recent anti-Hasan campaign has really illuminated how much they will twist and amplify every little thing they can.

I’ve been shouting this everywhere but I’m pretty sure their plan is to make it so you can never do that, and you have to subscribe to Fire tablet or whatever to participate in society

I think they’re hoping the result is that we can only afford cheap tablet devices that act as dumb terminals for their cloud services which we have to rent forever due to holding our data hostage so they can manufacture consent and prevent us from developing open solutions to their walled garden proprietary products.

I just set up HomeAssistant and I don’t buy anything that doesn’t work with it locally.

Smart interfaces are fine (as long as they connect locally and do not require a cloud connection).

Stop stuffing AI agents and voice controls into everything. It’s just an excuse to have a microphone that’s always recording.

Just remember that LLMs are good at one thing: summarizing large volumes of text with reasonable confidence.
