I was out with a friend this morning and she wanted to go to M&S for a coffee. When she scooped up all the froth, she was left with one third of a cup of coffee. At £3.70 it would have cost about £11.10 for a full cup.
I was all set to complain but she didn't want to make a fuss. This is why these companies can continue to rip people off

I laughed when I heard Wes Streeting has resigned as Health Secretary, saying he has lost confidence in his leader. At least Labour is consistent - making U-turns obviously runs in the whole ethos, but even for Labour it takes a lot of guts to make U-turns before you are elected. How long ago did he say he had full confidence in Sir Keir Starmer and would support him while he was in power? Obviously not a ‘No U-turn’ Street.
Beth8it!
I have pointed out (on here, I think, though wouldn’t swear to it) that she is the main reason for Labour’s loss of popularity. Starmer has taken responsibility for, which is as it should be, but his biggest fault was appointing someone with insufficient ability and the charm of a warthog. Sorry, warthogs - apologies. He can’t kick her out as there isn’t anyone else capable either, would create bedlam in the markets and it’s something he should have thought about before getting into power. In fact, much as I hate to say it, Gordon Brown was better as Chancellor than as P.M., even if he did create massive borrowing debt. She just wants to make a name for herself, so is staying very quiet now, not sharing the blame and hoping whoever gets in lets her stay on.

Kill enough patients and it reduces the waiting lists. We've had another death being investigated following concerns about the care he received (or lack of). In 2015 we had a woman at risk of suicide found hanged in an a&e cubicle, April '24 another death linked to poor care. I remember the days when you went to hospital to be made better. I am going back a lot of years though. Now it's more like a trip to the zoo, starting outside seeing the doctors shouting and dancing like monkeys at feeding time.

Keir Starmer was visiting a school and he decides to teach the youngsters a new word: 'tragedy' and he asks them to use it in a sentence.
One girl raises her hand and says "If a school bus carrying 20 people drove off a cliff and killed everyone in it, then that would be a tragedy."
"No," Starmer responds. "That isn't a tragedy. That is what we'd call a great loss."
Then a boy raises his hand and says "What about if my friend was at a farm, and a farmer drove over him with a tractor? That would be a tragedy."
"No," Starmer repeats. "That's what we'd call an accident, not a tragedy. Anyone else?"
The class is stumped, then finally another boy raises his hand and says "I know what a tragedy would be! If Keir Starmer was flying in a private jet and got hit by a missile, that would definitely be a tragedy."
"Exactly!" Starmer says, pleased. "Now, can you tell the class why, exactly, that would be a tragedy?"
"Well," the boy replies. "It definitely wouldn't be a great loss, and it probably wouldn't be an accident either."

Puppy update: Things are not great on the Storm-new-home front - the daughter of the family had quite a strong reaction to her time playing with the dogs - very itchy, streaming eyes and swellings all over. They really don't know what to do now, as they want to have Storm, but obviously can't have their daughter suffering like that, and the guy said he does't know if putting her on anti-histamines is a viable long-term solution. On the other hand, she could grow out of it, and could de-sensitise with continuous exposure to a dog - I can't make that decision for him. I suggested contacting his GP or a pharmacist to see what options are available - maybe a long-acting injection? Or find out about the tablets long-term, is there any disadvantage. All on hold for now.
On the plus side, I did get my plug wired up for the new filter and can re-use an existing outside socket, so don't need a new one put in. 😊
Shadow was very naughty this afternoon - I took them all out in front of the house, on the area under the trees, as they had a long walk at lunchtime and didn't need or want another. Storm was good, wandered along with Indi and me, but Shad got side-tracked and took no notice of me calling. In the end we all carried on without him, went round in a circle and back to the gate when he came tearing out of the bushes, looking very relieved to see us.
At lunchtime I had taken them on a longer walk as the morning one was a bit rushed and quite short. We went down to the stream, where Indi waded in and swooshed around, and the pups fetched sticks from the shallow area. Storm decided to be a bit braver and followed Indi into the deeper bit, halfway up his side, so Shadow went in too, they each grabbed a stick and galloped out with it, so I threw another for Indi. Storm, hanging over the edge of the bank, thought, 'I can reach that!' ... only he couldn't. One big splash, one puppy disappeared under water, came up spluttering and swimming perfectly naturally, decided he could live quite well without the stick and climbed out looking extremely unhappy. Lots of shaking himself dry, spluttering and looking accusingly at me (not guilty!) so we headed back home. I let them sleep in the sunshine for half an hour then put them to bed so I could get on with things.

I think it's fairer to say it doesn't always work - my cockapoo barely moults (I get a very small amount of dog hair around the house), and her temperament is brilliant. I guess you'll always get a range of results with any cross-breeding, and for someone with a severe allergy even the small amount of hair my dog sheds might be an issue.
Beth8it!
From what I read not long ago, people think that crossing a poodle with any breed makes the pups non-moulting and not-allergenic, but it doesn't work. Some dogs still moult, and then you have the poodle temperament to deal with as well - which can be a problem.
Rosy 2 cakes
Allergy UK also has good advice. If she is allergic it's usually the dander which causes the problem. But seeing GP is a good idea. Poodles and cockapoos are popular dogs for people with allergies.
Beth8it!
Jaffa - the trouble is, we haven't told the girl they might be getting Storm, in case they can't, which would upset both kids and make the girl feel guilty. Apparently it's not all dogs - she seems to be OK with the poodle-type that don't moult, but they don't want a poodle, they want a lab, specifically Storm. (they didn't come to get a dog, just met him and fell for him). They wouldn't be able to bring her repeatedly without her guessing why, and in the meantime I am still spending out on him and not advertising him. I need them to chase up meds details so we can get it sorted or give up the idea so I can advertise him.

Are they sure it is an allergic reaction to the dog and not tree pollen allergy. Must be awful not being able to have pets and have a normal life. I heard somewhere that if people can put up with the allergy for 6 weeks their bodies will develop a natural immunity, but that is easier said than done.

Puppy tails update: pups woke at 5.30am again, clean overnight so we are definitely getting there with the house-training (before you smart guys say it, I know - training a house is so difficult- how do you get it to fetch?). They have been clean and dry for about 10 days with only a couple of nights with wet pads when they refused to de-tank at night and just kept playing in the garden.
I had asked my electrician to drop in to look at a job and he called yesterday. Dogs all went out to say hello and his wife came out of the car to see them. Long story short, they may have Storm, subject to whether their daughter has an allergic reaction to him. They came back in the afternoon with the kids and we all went for a walk in the woods with the dogs. Storm absolutely loved them, especially the boy (about 8 or 9?), daughter 11, I think. Anyway, we didn’t tell them about having the pups in case it isn’t possible, but hopefully… Anyway, after playing in the garden, then going for a walk, I let the kids feed them, then they went and the pups staggered off to their bed and died for 2 hrs. Woke enough for a short trip to the garden about 9pm, back to bed again, and when I went to bed 11pm I literally had to lift them up, like boneless bags of jelly, pour them onto their feet and steer them outside again for a quick de-tank, then back to bed. Nice quiet evening!

Simon passed peacefully at 19:10 on Sun 10th May. He was at home, as he wanted to be and had myself, his parents and my mum with him. We were talking to him, telling him how much he is and was loved.
Everyone I have told has cried or sobbed. Everyone loved him.
I don't know how to live without him but somehow I'll learn. I'm surrounded by love too.

Em ~ I’m thinking of you and feeling for you. I said a prayer for you and Simon. I think you were both very brave and I admire you both for making the most of the time you had.
I didn’t know Simon but I cried for you when I read your message. Your love will see you through this. 💐

Em, so many people here will understand what you're going through and how hard it can be to cope with even the simplest things when you're hurting so much. As I say, there are no rights and wrongs when dealing with loss and grief - take it one step at a time, do what you have to do, and let everything else fall into place in due course. Some things will be hard, but you'll find the strength to pull through, especially with the love of your family and friends. And although Simon may not be there by your side, he'll live in your heart for ever, helping you every step of the way. Much love to you ...

Em, you're doing so well finding the strength to keep yourself busy with tasks. Just make sure you keep them as little ones and try to rest as much as you can.

All I can do is to keep saying "thank you."
My gramps has a hospital appt today to discuss his hip replacement. My mum is naturally going with him and wanted to be in work for 7 to do some tasks before the appt, so i bit the bullet and had my first night alone. If she had stayed with me, she'd have had to wake at 5 and leave at 6, so I wanted her to get more sleep since we only got a couple of hours the night before.
I don't want to put off things which will just become harder in time. But it was hard. I put a pillow & hot water bottle next to me to feel something warm on his side of the bed and put a recently worn t-shirt of his on the head pillow. Trying to comfort myself. I'm wearing his dressing gown this morning.
I have some little tasks to do today. I'm not washing Simon's clothes yet, but I have a load and a half of my own, things like that.

It's so sad that the more you love someone, the more it hurts to lose them. Deepest sympathy to you all. I hope that, in time, your happy memories will bring you consolation.
The next few weeks will be filled with things that you must do. It's later on that everything suddenly hits you, and you will find it hard. My thoughts are with you xx

Ditto what Happy said.
When I have been in this situation with close family members it’s the little and sometimes mundane things that keep you occupied when just sitting might be difficult.
I remember after my dad died at 50 seeing a pot of paint that they had bought to re paint the hall so that’s what mum and I did.I know some friends and family thought we were mad but it got us through the first few days and that was all that mattered.
Your zip lock idea is such a good one x

Em, I think what you have done today is lovely, you will be able to open the zip lock bag whenever you want to feel close to Simon. And Simon's mum will be able to do the same with hers, thanks to you thinking of her also. Look after yourself, I know so many of us will be keeping you in our thoughts. Am sending a vurtual hug your way x

Thank you to all of those who I haven't thanked yet.
I am sorry to those I have made cry and perhaps brought back painful memories.
We can support each other.
I've just been finding little tasks to keep myself busy today. I wanted to put one of his recently worn t-shirts in a zip lock bag. I want it to remind me of him and keep his scent as long as possible. I then thought that his mum would want the same, so I bagged one up and walked round to her. She really appreciated it.
I'll keep finding little things to do until I can get to the big things.

Em - too soon now, I know, but when you feel up to it, come back and see the pups again, come for a walk in the woods. When our lovely Yorkshire friend, who was a holiday let tenant at that time, lost her husband she rang to cancel their planned trip but I kept it open for her, told her to come if she felt up to it, and she did - she said it helped so much to revisit places they had been together. She felt he was still there with her.

Some time ago I read something someone wrote after his daughter died in her 30s. He got great comfort from a friend saying don’t think of it as a life cut short but a life completed. I can’t imagine anything is a comfort just now but hopefully later. Just let yourself feel what you are feeling Em, without fighting it or analysing it. Just go with it. It will work itself out.

Like others I'm glad Simon didn't suffer. Believe it or not life will go on & he will become a happy memory.

Devastated to hear this, Em - Simon seems to have deteriorated very quickly and, as has been said, it's perhaps a small mercy that he didn't suffer for too long. No consolation for you, of course...
Be kind to yourself - none of us can know how we might cope in these circumstances, but the most important thing to bear in mind is that we are all different, and there are no rights and wrongs when it comes to dealing with such a huge loss.
As always, I send my love to you and yours. It sounds as though you will be surrounded by love from your family in the coming weeks and months, and I hope that the happy memories you have of your time with Simon will help sustain you throughout these difficult times.

So sorry to read the sad news, Em. I had noticed that you hadn't been about recently but I usually only check the postcodes and rarely read the messages so didn't know what was going on. It's as if a sixth sense told me that I should read the messages tonight. Whilst it is so sad, it is good that it seems that Simon didn't suffer for too long. It's also good that those that matter to him were with him when the end came.
