My crowdfunding experience as a maker.
My crowdfunding experience as a maker.Hi Everyone, I recently launched my crowdfunding campaign (Hyper), and I thought I'd share my experience with Bambu Lab's crowdfunding feature for those who are also considering it. It began with a free PC case I uploaded. It got quite popular and I was invited to crowdfunding. At first I wasn't sure why crowdfunding, but after going through the process, I think learning how to set up a proper product and figuring out how to present your design to an audience is the main reason it was worth it.Image: the original model that started it all. Like many of you, I'm primarily a maker. My favourite part is simply engineering and building things. But in order to contribute your work to the greater community, you need to be able to show people what it can do and let them know about it — these soft skills don’t come naturally to me. What the crowdfunding process gave me was a structure for learning how to present my designs, what's actually important, and what channels to reach people through. The MakerWorld staff and their guidelines were helpful in pointing me towards putting effort into what actually increases interest. It all comes down to clear images, making videos of your creation, and sharing them on social media and Reddit. It sounds simple, but there are a lot of decision points that can be time consuming to figure out alone. For example, I learned not to get hung up on production value. An honest and clear showing of what your design brings to the table gets more people interested than a super polished studio shot. You're essentially letting your design’s function do the talking, and most of us makers are better at that than filmography anyway. Image: White table with white background works well. Because Bambu Lab's goal is to encourage more complex 3D printed designs that make full use of 3D printers, their goals naturally align with ours as makers. That alignment is what makes the support genuinely useful rather than one-sided. I think it's definitely worth a go, even if your first crowdfunding campaign isn't an instant winner. It'll be a hands-on learning experience for your next one.  To get started, you basically email MakerWorld with clear images and an explanation of how your design works — they usually reply within a day or two. From there, my realisation with social media is don't try to sell your product. People are less responsive to that than if you just share something interesting. People are supportive if it genuinely solves a problem and it's a design that people like. The rest you'll get more guidance on from the Bambu Lab staff along the way. Hope my experience brings a different perspective to those considering crowdfunding but not seeing the why, like I was. If you're interested in checking out how my campaign is going, check out HYPER on the crowdfunding page.  - Haydn
