From an Idea to Impact: Inside the Puffadders Hackathon

What a hackathon experience it was!! Before diving into that, let me start this post with a question: Have you ever experienced burnout? That feeling where you’re constantly working, but your mind feels exhausted… your focus drops, your motivation fades, and even simple tasks start to feel overwhelming. That’s burnout and it’s becoming increasingly common, especially among students and young professionals. Personally, I've battled with that before, for a whooping 6 months!! You can imagine how traumatizing the experience was. Mental health is something we often overlook while chasing productivity, deadlines, and goals. Enough of the story😂 Yesterday (4th April 2026), I attended the Puffadders Hackathon at the University of Eldoret, which was planned by Fidel Kivumbi. The title for the hackathon was : Mental Health. Alongside my 3 teammates: Kelvin Adede, Valentine & Polycarp, we began brainstorming solutions around mental health (that's when my experience with burnout struck my mind😂). We then explored how technology could help people detect and prevent burnout before it becomes overwhelming. From those discussions, our concept evolved into something meaningful. We built a system (NeuroGuard) that passively monitors user behavior such as screen time, typing activity, and app switching patterns to detect early signs of mental fatigue. Once a risk is identified, it responds in real-time with simple, personalized interventions like guided breathing exercises and calming music to help users reset and regain focus, hence allowing them to stay productive without pushing themselves to burnout. We refined the idea, developed it further, and eventually pitched it before a panel of judges. I’m proud to share that we emerged as 1st Runner-Up in the competition. This journey meant a lot because it was inspired by a real experience, something many people silently go through. A big thank you to Puffadders and Meza Counselling for creating such an incredible platform to innovate, learn, and grow. I would really appreciate your feedback on this idea that we had. It was a pleasure listening to brilliant minds like: Immaculate Kimani, Fidel Kivumbi, Vivian Cheruiyot, Johncyra Nyandoro, Justin Mwathi, among others.

Yesterday was a watershed moment for Puffadders, and for every student dreamer who has never had the chance to show case their idea.Centered around the theme of mental health, the day reminded us that innovation is not just about technology, but about creating solutions that truly improve lives. That’s when I realized something bigger than myself was taking shape an idea born from a single morning when I asked: why don’t university students have a platform to showcase their brilliance? Yesterday’s hackathon was just that a spark ignited into a flame when 23 fearless participants walked into a space, full of possibility, that we built from scratch. Puffadders was never just a website; it was a lifeline. After a chance encounter at a hackathon, I met a brilliant programmer James Ngandu, and together, we dared to believe in a new kind of innovation ground. Yesterday, that dream became real. We didn’t have sponsors at first; we didn’t have a safety net. But thanks to the mentorship of Confrey Mung'au Alianji, MBA, the invaluable guidance of Becky Aloo, PhD, the University of Eldoret innovation head, and the surprise support of Meza Counselling, we made something extraordinary happen. Yesterday’s event was proof that when we believe in young minds, the world stands with us. But this is just the beginning. After all, a student asked me yesterday, “Do I have to pay to join a hackathon?” And in that moment, I realized we have a responsibility not just to build a platform, but to break down barriers to access, to make innovation inclusive, and to remove every single financial hurdle. So today, I call on titans of innovation—Mastercard, Equity Bank Limited, Zeraki, Safaricom PLC, Raspberry Pi Foundation,Google ,Miscroft Ingressive For Good Cloudware Africa Amazon Web Services (AWS) —to partner with us. Together, we can build a future where no student pays a price for their dreams. We need you to help us take this from a campus spark to a global flame. We need you so we can give every student in Kenya, and beyond, a chance to innovate, a chance to be seen, and a chance to shape the world. Thank you to every judge Tonny Blaire Onyango Damaris Naliaka Simiyu Dr.philip Dancun, every participant, every mentor Titus Kimaiyo —your belief made this possible. And now, let’s soar, together.
