"My" breed is bred as a fisherman's helper in Portugal, the breed needs to be able to climb onto boats, and my eldest innately knew how to climb ladders from puppy hood on, she'll often make it known she wants me to support her neck/shoulders, and then she'll climb onto vertical things. (Youngest is re-homed, and less agile in everything, not sure if it's because of her different start or just different interests and drive)
Definitely going to have a look at sailing kayaks!
As I mentioned, I use a SUP board now, so it's extremely low on the water. They both wear their Ruffwear Float Coats when we're out (and I wear a PFD, especially when I go out alone, even when I can wade everywhere I paddle), and they're a great help in getting the pooches back on board.
They swim to the side of the boat, I let them hand me their toy first if they want (or not, all the same to me), and they'll sort of swim more upright, like we do treading water, and hook their front paws on the board. The buoyancy of the Float Coats helps with that I suppose. Then I just pull them up and towards the other side of the board.
Occasionally (especially when I get tired) I'll hold on to the opposite side of the board to give myself something to pull them towards, but usually it's a one handed operation.
I'm thinking of maybe using some pool floats with a rubber mat between them hooked on to the middle of the boat and into the water, the middle of the rubber should sink, and they would hopefully be able to clamber out of the water?
I've been kayaking(ish) with my dogs on a SUP board for a few years now, and between getting a second dog and them growing into full adulthood, we're now too heavy to comfortably paddle on the SUP I own, and it only has fins in the back, so it's extremely unstable when they jump off of the front to retrieve bumpers etc.I'm looking to get in touch with people that paddle with their pooches, and I'm hoping to gain some insights and/or get some advice on what types of kayaks are compatible with dogs.
My dogs are both Portuguese Water Dogs, and they weigh around 23kg's (50lbs) each. I would really like for them to be able to jump and swim from the new kayak (and perhaps more importantly; get back on board again). I've been thinking about maybe making/getting a ramp to help them get back on board, but those might be bulky and inconvenient, and most of them are quite expensive. Unfortunately I don't have the space to store a complete kayak, so I'm looking at sit-on-top or open models that are inflatable (dropstitch only because of the dogs) or modular hard body kayaks.(I've looked at foldable models, but the open models appear to be very flimsy)
What are your experiences with and recommendations for specific models?
Models I'm currently looking at:
-
Dropstitch Aqua Marina Cascade (Kayak/SUP, easier (dis)embarking for the dogs)
-
Dropstitch Aquatone Playtime 11'4" (Kayak/SUP, cheaper than aquamarine, max load is ample)
-
Dropstitch 1p Aqua Marina Tomahawk AIR-K 375 (lighter, more agile, max load only barely covers the three of us)
-
Dropstitch 1.5p Aircanoe Cruiser 393S (same price as air-k 375, but much higher max load)
-
Modular 1/2p Point Falcon Tandem (1p max load is too low, 2p might be too long for me by myself)
-
Dropstitch 2p Aqua Marina Tomahawk AIR-K 440 (more stable sideways, heavier, fantastic max load)
-
Dropstitch 2/3p Aircanoe Cruiser 470D (more expensive than AIR-K 440, only slightly higher max load than Cruiser 393S)

And yes, I did read the wiki page on choosing a boat, and searched for dogs in the previous posts 😉
Not sure if you're the creator of that video, but in light of not simply downvoting you I'll let you know why I dislike this video.
It only shows the actual nail art for the briefest of moments, making it impossible to look at without pausing the clip at the exact right moment. Besides that there's no source for the original images, let alone a link to the howto.
To me this looks more like an advert for the CGI used to "draw" the progressively more intricate images than a clip featuring nail art.
