Kilkerran 15th Anniversary
Kilkerran 15th Anniversary
It's hard to believe "the other" distillery in J & A Mitchell's portfolio, and still the youngest in Campbeltown (for now), will soon be celebrating its 20th anniversary this year. It seems like only yesterday fans of the Glengyle distillery were arguing over which country/market should get their preferred cask type from these 15th Anniversary bottlings. Although, I'd say most were just happy to get their hands on any bottle at all.It was 10 years after the distillery started production when the

1996 Ben Nevis Vol. 02
**Check out Volume 01 here.**My series of 1996 Ben Nevis continues with today's installment of some of the oldest stock from that legendary vintage. There were a couple of 27 year old's released towards the end of last year, according to "the base" though, so perhaps we'll see some more in the near future. You do have to wonder how much stock is currently remaining from this wonderous vintage. After going on such a run in recent years of seeing so many '96ers bottled from...just about every ind
Glenfarclas
Glenfarclas
I had to make my first entry into the Glenfarclas "ledger" a special one, so reaching into some of the older samples I had from them seemed appropriate. Finding "old" 'Farclas isn't relatively all that difficult though, when you consider they're one of only a handful of distilleries able to stock a consistent 30 and 40 year old in their core range. Daftmill
Daftmill
There was a time when Daftmill sort of felt like it was becoming the new Springbank or Weller/Buffalo Trace a few years ago. The whisky nerds gabbed on and on about their love for this farm to bottle, traditional Lowland style of whisky producer so much that their "small batch," limited releases often got snatched up and flipped instantaneously. The single casks are still pretty coveted but the overall consistency, increased bottle counts, market expansions and retail mark-ups have helped to kee

Balvenie19 Year |The Balvenie Stories - The Edge of Burnhead Wood| - 48.7%I'm not sure which number story this is...but for some context, this authentic expression was released back in 2020, using ingredients that were grown or harvested solely on the Balvenie estate...back in the year 2000. Meaning...water from Robbie Dhu springs, of course...as well as 100% of the estate grown, floor malted barley...which is typically only used in very small portions of production. As an added fuel source, the

Bruichladdich (Nickolls & Perks)2005/18 Year |Inaugural Casks| Fresh Bourbon Barrel 518 - 54.7%I've already touched on these N&P "Inaugural Casks" back in my Springbank post from the same series, so I'll get right into this lil' Laddie. They've specifically went with the term "fresh" here instead of just saying "first fill," which similar to the way Springbank uses it, usually means it was a pretty "wet" cask that was filled. Side note...this bares a striking resemblance to a really tasty valinc

Laphroaig Cairdeas 2022 & Elements L1.0
As Bobby D would say, the times...they are a changin' over at Laphroaig. Islay's southern coast stalwart has been one of the busiest distilleries, post-pandemic...from sending their new Distillery Manager, Barry MacAffer all over the world, to increasing the in-house maltings, fermentation times (up to 72 hours now), adding a couple of new washbacks, and even adding some new warehouses on-site (with more coming soon). As with everything else on Islay though, the distilleries bigger plans to incr
Glen Scotia Duo
Glen Scotia Duo
A nice little survey into how Glen Scotia's popularity has grown, in recent years would be to look at their annual Campbeltown Malts Festival release. What started as a somewhat modest, but substantial "limited offering" back in 2018 of 2,400 bottles, has jumped to TEN TIMES that amount in less than only five years. The 2022 and 2023 Malts Fest editions each had a turnout of 24,000 bottles stretching globally to markets far and wide. Production levels aside...that's a massive leap for any distil
