The mission of IBM Research is to deliver the future of computing, by orchestrating breakthroughs in quantum, AI, silicon and algorithms. The IBM Research Europe – Zurich lab was established in 1956. As the first European branch of IBM Research, the focus of the Zurich Lab is to cultivate close relationships with academic and industrial partners, be a premier hub for the world's best research talent, and help drive Europe's innovation agenda. The Zurich lab features three core research areas: Algorithms, Information, Data & Applications; Quantum & AI Technologies; and Security Research. Across these fields, researchers are pushing the boundaries of science and technology, driving innovation in Europe and beyond.

Meet the team

IBM Research Europe – Zurich employs a steady stream of postdoctoral fellows, PhD candidates, and summer students who pass through the Laboratory. More than 45 nationalities, primarily from European countries, are represented among the research staff members, including such specialists as computer scientists, mathematicians, electrical engineers, physicists, and chemists. They often work together on an interdisciplinary basis.

Think Lab

The Zurich Think Lab is the door to IBM Research in Europe and makes what’s next in computing actionable for clients. It offers a stimulating environment to explore future technologies and their transformative impact on business and society. The Think Lab brings together clients and researchers to discuss how AI, hybrid cloud, security, quantum computing, and accelerated discovery can transform their businesses. The Think Lab is co-located with the IBM Research Zurich lab, home to two Nobel Prizes and the unique noise-free labs for cutting-edge research in materials science and nanotechnology.


Research Areas

Algorithms, Information, Data & Applications

We develop next-generation algorithms and applications for emerging computing paradigms. Building on IBM Research’s focus on the future of algorithms, our department advances new methods to rethink how complex simulations, optimization tasks, and computational discovery workflows are solved. We create algorithmic innovations that bridge foundational computing advances with high-impact applications, enabling more powerful, efficient, and scalable approaches to scientific and industrial problem solving.

Security Research

We are creating technologies that aim to seamlessly, and inherently, protect classical and next generation computing systems and allow them to stay ahead of attackers. We are designing and implementing worldwide leading innovations of the next generation of cryptography, hardware powered security, robustness of AI against adversarial attacks, decentralized trust systems (incl. Central Bank Digital Currencies), as well as system and software security analysis.

BRNC - Binnig and Rohrer Nanotechnology Center

The Binnig and Rohrer Nanotechnology Center provides a cutting-edge, collaborative infrastructure designed specifically for advancing nanoscience. It hosts cleanroom space, which is jointly operated with ETH Zurich, as well as offices and dry labs. Additionally, six noise-free labs designed by IBM provide a new level of accuracy for fabricating and characterizing at the true 1-nanometer level and beyond.
