Wherever The Struggle is, is the autobiographical account of one man's journey in political activism over some sixty years. Bob Newland’s lifelong commitment to the socialist cause has led him through a life of campaigning, revolutionary agitation, party work—and perhaps most remarkably—highly dangerous undercover actions in South Africa against the apartheid regime.

His reflections on the highs and lows of a life of political struggle are an inspiration to all, and a reminder that despite the hardships that define the politics of any era, the greatest value comes from keeping the faith, staying committed, and never doubting that a better world is possible.

Bob Newland writes: ‘Time and again, I’ve seen that it’s often the small acts that keep a movement alive. A single pamphlet tucked under a door, a supportive letter sent to a prisoner, a local boycott that chips away at an oppressive regime’s morale. These moments might seem insignificant in isolation, yet collectively, they can prepare the ground for massive change. It’s easy to focus on the dramatic peaks of history and forget that behind every “overnight” success story stands a decade or more of patient, quiet work.’

"A working-class hero to his fingertips." Ronnie Kasrils, veteran of Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) and high-ranking member of the South African Communist Party (SACP) and African National Congress (ANC)

Foreword by Peter Hain Introduction by Ronnie Kasrils

Reviews:

"Bob Newland’s autobiography is one of those rare examples of a memoir written by one of the foot soldiers of the progressive movement. Despite making often heroic contributions, as in Bob’s case, they are usually omitted from mainstream histories."
- Morning Star.

"It is a universal truth that genuine political change only ever comes about due to the incremental work and sacrifice of those willing to ‘do their bit’. Such work is often carried out behind the scenes, over many years, away from the speaker’s podium or media glare. It comes with little fanfare or favour. But it is nonetheless vital because such sacrifice is the ultimate cost of final victory. As Bobby Sands once put it: ‘Everyone, republican or otherwise has their own particular part to play. No part is too great or too small, no one is too old or too young to do something.’ Bob Newland is a testament to that truth." - Danny Morrison
