Adding Users

  I am trying to add Users to a new site. They were all invited at the same time and in the same way. A few could join successfully but others are clicking on Accept Invitation and being told the invite in not valid??

  The blog I need help with is: (visible only to logged in users)

  Hi @hardingtravels

  This is a known quirk with WordPress.com invitations and there are a few reasons why some invites work while others don’t, even when sent at the same time. Here’s what to check:

  Most likely causes

  1. The invitee already has a WordPress.com account under a different email This is the most common cause. If someone clicks “Accept Invitation” but is logged into WordPress.com with a different account than the email the invite was sent to, they’ll get the “invite not valid” error. Ask the affected users to:

  • Log out of WordPress.com completely
  • Log back in using the exact email address the invitation was sent to
  • Then click the invitation link again

  2. The invitation link expired WordPress.com invitation links have a validity window. If the affected users waited a few days before clicking, the link may have already expired even though it was sent at the same time as the others.

  The fix: Go to My Site → Users → Invite and resend fresh invitations specifically to the users who are having trouble.

  3. The invite email landed in spam Sometimes the original invite goes to spam and the user finds it days later, by which point it may have expired. Ask them to check their spam folder for the most recent invite.

  4. The user clicked the link multiple times Invitation links are single-use on WordPress.com. If a user clicked Accept, hit a login screen, then clicked the link again from their email, it reads as already used and shows invalid.

  What to do right now

  Go to My Site → Users and resend fresh invitations to only the affected users. Make sure they:

  • Check the email address the invite is going to
  • Click Accept immediately without delay
  • Are logged out of any other WordPress.com accounts first

  Let us know if the problem persists after resending!
