Are you familiar with the card game "Spot It!"? I'm absolutely horrible at it.
So, my next project will be a Spot It! clone written in and .
I plan to build it in public with regular updates. If you're interested, please follow along.

I got my family to listen to the latest @pageit2thelimit episode where I interview @walkingriver about Communication Breakdowns and his latest book, "You Can't Say That At Work".
After listening to the episode my brother ended up buying the book!

Another Angular testing tip.
If you don't have any expect calls in your test, it still passes. Great way to get test coverage without the pain. 😅

I once worked with a guy who thought if we used too many GUIDs we'd run out. This web site is awesome! I burned through about a dozen of them today.

I found a bug this morning. The "card" score toast is showing the total score. I'm also not seeing the PWA updated automatically on my phone.
I scored 17306 points in SpyDuh (van-yacht-memory with 4 symbols per card). Try to beat my score at
I don't know if this is significant, but I earned more on my blog posts at medium in January than I did on my courses on Udemy. Neither is huge, but it feels backward.

I was on a team call once and sent a coworker a message over Skype that said, "Well, this is going down a rat hole."
He was sharing his screen at the time and everyone saw the message pop up.
The manager asked, "Something you want to say, Mike?" 😅

If you are presenting to a room full of people, remember to turn off your notifications for email, slack, etc. Most of us don't need to see a notification pop up that says, "Hi, Mike!" Or worse...

Overheard a coworker when asked about an estimate:
"I am very confident that it could be done within a finite amount of time."

In 2005 I walked away from a promising software development career. Here is what I did over the next 3 years and what brought me back.

I have been a proponent of YAGNI (You ain't gonna need it) for years now, whenever someone suggests over-complicating our code.
At the risk of being presumptuous, today I am coining a new term for those who think everything needs to be abstracted:
NOENT: No one else needs this

I may do this a few times. This one is my "political" version. I can also do an "NFL" version. The four people I've met and chatted with all have something in common, but that is not how I ended up meeting them.

Let's see what my friends think:
1) George W. Bush
2) Mitt Romney
3) Harry Reid
4) J. W. Marriott Jr.
5) Orin Hatch twitter.com/CharlesPPierce…
An interesting downside to not paying attention to any news media for a week is that I have very few topics of conversation. Does that mean I was only talking news and politics?

Alrighty, it's after midnight, but I wanted to get this "quick" #buildinpublic update. I added a side-bar navigation menu with the ion-split-pane and the app's version # at the bottom of the menu.

I can't decide which is worse:
‣ No documentation
‣ Inaccurate documentation
Yes, I can: inaccurate documentation is definitely worse.

Reminder of the day. When you're pushing a Node/Express app to Azure, don't hard-code your listening port. Instead, listen on process.env.PORT. I can't tell you how long that one had me baffled.

I recently got two teams together who didn't know each other. One had a business problem, and the other a technical solution.
No code written, or money spent, but we now have an enhanced guest experience.
Can I still call myself a software developer?
