Commerce Data Service helps the 12 Bureaus of the U.S. Department of Commerce to rapidly create and develop projects to advance the Department's mission. Organized as a new shared services model, the Data Service tackles core infrastructure issues around the Commerce Department and helps enrich human capital.

We're hiring!


Frontend: Designer

  • Develop concepts and wire frames, producing sitemaps and user flows, creating clickable prototypes.
  • Plan + execute usability testing sessions and delivering documentation on the results and insights from the testing.
  • Incorporate user insight, analytics, best practice, competitor analysis, and bureau information to inform design decisions.
  • Executes design work consistent with design and brand standards, analytics insight, and customer feedback.
  • Delivers design work on programs of any size with minimal oversight.
  • Delivers appropriate level of specification needed to ensure high quality development on time.

Backend: Data Engineer

  • Create optimized parallel Map-Reduce (or similar) algorithms.
  • Craft Hadoop (or similar) solutions to improve performance and end-user experience.
  • Design and developing large-scale data structures.
  • Tune application and query performance against large, complex data structures.
  • Build efficient and robust ETL workflows. Building robust and scaleable APIs.
  • Solve complex data problems, which may involve successfully executing on tasks ranging from data & metadata modeling to ETL to reporting, on a daily basis.
  • Process unstructured data into a form suitable for analysis - and then do the analysis.

Data Scientist

  • conducts discovery sprints and exploratory analysis to develop the hypothesis to be tested and operationalized;
  • operationalize business and policy problems through mathematical, statistical, and computational techniques (e.g. machine learning + data mining, statistical research);
  • prototypes rapidly and iteratively client-focused data science products (e.g. predictive algorithms, discovery tools, data visualization, insightful operations-oriented dashboards);
  • communicate + synthesize quantitative findings to convey insights as well as to ensure reproducible products.

Frontend:Frontend Engineer

  • Works with the Designer and the Lead Front-End Engineer to execute on the top priority projects in the pipeline;
  • Implements interface designs from the Designer;
  • Develops (impromptu) data visualizations for DOC bureaus;
  • Documents process, insight and deliverables;
  • Identifies + Implements ways to maximise the efficiency of workflow between teams (Interoperability and Insights) in an agile process.

Backend: Infrastructure Engineer

  • Use a wide variety of open source technologies and cloud services (AWS is required)
  • Possess knowledge of best practices in an always-up, always-available service
  • Create cloud formation templates to build AWS services that support the team's custom applications;
  • Build the whole stack ELB (elastic load balancing) to databases, move and launch websites to their new locations;
  • Guide the team through the process in a pretty short outage window;
  • Work collaboratively with the Discovery and Insights teams to deploy and operate our systems - automating and streamlining operations and processes as necessary;
  • Build + maintain tools for deployment, monitoring and operations;
  • Troubleshoot + resolve issues in our dev, test and production environments;
