This discussion offers a place to post your opinions on what you're doing or need to do to keep yourself employable as a Java developer or other Java-related professional. Are there technologies you know (or need to know) to keep up with the crowd? Are you certified, or do you even need to be? Are you looking past Java to the "next big thing"? This is the place to discuss your career in Java, past, present, and future.

Hackers and Painters is a roller-coaster ride through the mind of Paul Graham -- delving into such diverse areas of life as why nerds are unpopular in school as well as why hackers should use dynamic typed languages. As the title implies, there are many references in the book to Paul's experience as a painter, shaping his philosophical views of life as a programmer from an artists perspective. I was especially drawn to many concepts in this book, and I'm excited to discuss this, because of my own experience as a classical percusionist and electronic composer. Life, art, science, programming -- it's all up for discussion.

Refactoring to Patterns is the marriage of refactoring -- the process of improving the design of existing code -- with patterns, the classic solutions to recurring design problems. Refactoring to Patterns suggests that using patterns to improve an existing design is better than using patterns early in a new design. This is true whether code is years old or minutes old. We improve designs with patterns by applying sequences of low-level design transformations, known as refactorings.

JSP Bean, ... by shmish111 2008-09-30 06:52 |

In Beyond Java, Bruce Tate (co-author of Better, Faster, Lighter Java and Spring: A Developer's Notebook) looks at how Java became the most rapidly and widely successful language of all time, and the decisions and compromises it had to make to get to the top. He then argues that, for the first time in a decade, conditions are right for major innovations to occur outside the Java realm. He says Java's inescapable limitations are catching up with the language, and that developers need to start being aware of other languages and frameworks, and shows some prime candidates for your attention.
