This summer I had the honor of mentoring under Anjelica Martinez, Ph.D, a research analyst with the Kinder Institute for Urban Research, as part of Rice University’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship. Working with Dr. Martinez on the Maternal Health Project, I developed codebooks for interview data from over 300 immigrant mothers in Houston. I gained invaluable research experience and insight into the challenges immigrant mothers face in accessing perinatal healthcare. One of the highlights of this program has been the opportunity to work on an independent research project, allowing me to explore my interest in health access for Hispanic and Latino Texans. I attended and presented at Rice’s Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium, where I was able to share my learning and connect with an amazing group of students who are just as passionate about exchanging knowledge. This has been a deeply fulfilling opportunity. I’m grateful to Dr. Martinez for her guidance throughout this program, and excited to continue applying what I’ve learned!
