Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. John Armiger

John became Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. at the U.S. Embassy in Kigali, Rwanda on January 14, 2026. He began his assignment as Deputy Chief of Mission on August 3, 2024. Previously, he served as Chief of Political and Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in Lusaka, Zambia where he supported the development of the first-ever Trans-African Corridor connecting the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Prior to Zambia, he served as the Deputy Political Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi, Kenya where he shaped the first U.S.-Kenya Bilateral Strategic Dialogue in 2019. Previous overseas assignments include tours in New Delhi, India and Port-au-Prince, Haiti. In Washington, John served two tours in the Executive Secretariat as a Watch Officer in the Secretary’s 24-hour crisis management and communications center and as a Line Officer managing the Secretary’s foreign travel.
Prior to joining the U.S. Foreign Service, John was a Peace Corps volunteer in Benin and a legislative aide in the U.S. Senate. He holds a B.A. from Hobart College, an M.S. from Georgetown University School of Foreign Service, and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center. John and his wife, Martina, have energetic and well-traveled twin boys. A native of Baltimore, John believes a perfect summer day is eating Old Bay-coated Maryland blue crabs on the Chesapeake Bay after an Orioles game.
